What is an Allergy

An allergy is defined as a widespread occurrence of several allergens in the environment. The substance causing the allergy is called an allergen

Some causes behind the hay fever might be the following:

Dust mites, mould and pet dander, hair spray, industrial fumes, chemicals, cigarettes it could also be caused by tree pollen.

Ganesh Diagnostic and Imaging Center provides an allergy sensitive test panel which identifies the presence of antibodies in the blood that are produced against the allergens.

Some Symptoms of an allergy are listed below:

  1. Itchiness in nose, mouth, eyes, throat, and skin
  2. Runny nose and watery eyes
  3. Puffiness under the eyes
  4. Congestion in chest and ear canals
  5. Frequent fatigue and irritability
  6. Constant headache
  7. Soreness experienced in the throat
  8. Skin Itchiness

Generally there are 2 types of allergic rhinitis, i.e. seasonal and perennial.

A seasonal allergy usually occurs mainly during change of season or transition phase i.e. during spring or fall.

These are usually outdoor allergens and are detected by a hay fever test.

While a perennial allergy occurs the whole year long mainly due to allergens based indoors

However, allergens listed above can be diagnosed using the test- Rhinitis test.

In general, the allergy is triggered by the following reasons:

  1. Humidity
  2. Air pollutants
  3. Wood smoke
  4. Hairspray
  5. Rapid change in temperature

How does the Immune system Work?

  1. The immune system usually works on identifying the foreign particles that might enter the body and thereby neutralizing them as soon as detected.
  2. The immune system in this case, might be sensitive to a particular allergen or several/multiple allergens.
  3. This could further result in an adverse hypersensitivity reaction that becomes quite severe in nature.

Rhinitis test

A Rhinitis test is also very important to understand which allergen against the body might react in an aggressive fashion.

Higher the concentration achieved, the more intense is the immune system’s reaction against the corresponding allergens.

Hence, it is important to understand the intensity of the patient’s immune system’s reaction in response to the allergen.

Both ELISA and flow Cytometry are used as reliable techniques, but the latter is more preferred due to the minimal manual error in the test.

What is Asthma?

It is a frequent long-term inflammatory illness of the lungs. Depending on the person, the quenches of the events can happen either a few times per day or a few times per week.

For example, when the person exercises heavily or at nighttime, it tends to get worse. Asthma is also both hereditary and environmental factors working in unison.

Recent research has also shown that it is becoming more and more prevalent as a result of the alterations existing in both the living environment along with hereditary epigenetic (DNA sequence).

Indications of Allergy Asthma Test

When you start have symptoms such as a runny nose, wheezing, itchy eyes, etc., an allergy test is advised. In this test, a patient's blood is drawn to measure the blood levels of IgE (allergen-specific immunoglobulin) antibodies.

The test is considered to be positive for allergic rhinitis incase the IgE level is greater than 100 ng/ml.

Why is the Asthma Allergy Test Panel done?

In the skin test that is conducted to test the allergy, the allergen usually enters the body through a small prick. An allergy blood test estimates the antibodies present as an antibody is the body's defense mechanism against an allergen or a foreign particle.

Guidelines to follow before, during and after the test

Here are some guidelines an individual can refer to once they have decided to undergo Allergy Asthma Panel Test.

The required documents needed for this test includes your valid government ID and an appropriate Doctor’s prescription.

Before the Test:

  • Milk allergy doesn't require any additional prior preparation.
  • Because the blood test is straightforward, it's advised to avoid eating after an hour for the best results.
  • It is done to confirm allergies, as well as during and after allergy treatments.

During the Test (Procedure):

How to take a blood sample from an adult:

  1. A band is placed 3–4 inches above the collection point around the arm (the superficial vein that lies within the elbow pit) The skin is pulled taut by removing the needle cap and holding it parallel to the vein.
Pulling the syringe's plunger out slowly allows for the collection of the necessary volume of blood samples.

  2. The wrap band is undone, gauze is spread on the location of the collection, and the needle is taken out.
For safe and hygienic disposal, the syringe and needle are placed in the proper "sharp container"

Result Interpretations

  •  If the total IgE level is increased, it indicates that you one or more allergies.
  • Sometimes, increased levels are also associated with parasitic infections.
  • An elevated IgE only indicates an allergic process but does not indicate what foreign material the patient is allergic to.
  • In general, it has been seen that greater the number of things a person is allergic to; the value of IgE level is higher.
