What is an Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Test?

Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein,normally made by the foetal liver.This blood test quantifies the mother's blood's concentration of Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) during her pregnancy. It is found in the amniotic fluid, which surrounds the foetus. It enters the mother's bloodstream through the placenta. AFP levels that are abnormal may indicate:

• Down’s syndrome
• Neural tube defects
• Twins

Procedure Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) Test

• A lab technician will tie a rubber band around your arm to find a vein, usually from the inside of the elbow.
• Then they will clean the skin using an alcohol swab
• After this a sterile needle is inserted into a vein to draw a blood sample you might feel a little discomfort when the needle is inserted into a vein
• After collecting the blood sample ,it is sent to the lab for further analysis
• The puncture site is covered with a bandage or cotton ball.

After the Test

1. The patient should keep the dressing strip on for another 15 min.
2. No other specific type of care is required 

What Does the Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)  Test Report Indicate?

• Lower levels of AFP protein in a blood indicates that the baby may have genetic disorders such as down's syndrome
• High level of AFP protein indicates that the baby may be at high risk of neural tube defects or have a more than one baby
• Normal level of AFP indicates that there is no risk of chromosomal abnormalities in a baby
