Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the bacterial community in the vagina. It is not caused by a single bacterial species, but rather by a shift in the normal vaginal microbiota, leading to an overgrowth of certain bacteria and a decrease in others. BV is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but it is considered a condition related to the vaginal microbiome.

Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis can vary, but may include a thin, grayish-white vaginal discharge with a characteristic "fishy" odor, vaginal itching or discomfort, and a change in vaginal pH. However, some women with BV may not experience any noticeable symptoms, and the condition may be diagnosed during routine gynecological exams.

Diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis is typically based on clinical evaluation, including a physical examination and analysis of vaginal discharge under a microscope. A characteristic "clue cell" appearance, where vaginal epithelial cells are covered with bacteria, is often seen in BV. In some cases, additional tests may be performed to rule out other possible causes of vaginal infections.
