Types of Jaundice Disease - Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

Suffering from Jaundice fever? Know all about the types and symptoms of Jaundice and how to diagnose and prevent Jaundice disease.

What is Jaundice

Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the body tissues that result from deposition of bilirubin.

The tissue deposition of bilirubin would occur only in the presence of any serum Hyperbilirubinemia, which could be a sign of liver disease.

Key Facts:

  • Prevalence of jaundice in adults is considered to be rare, while jaundice in babies is considered common, with an estimation of 80% affected during their first week of life.
  • Severe jaundice in babies which is not treated in time can cause brain damage. The baby must be checked for the level of jaundice in hospital and again within 48 hours after you have left the hospital.

Types of Jaundice Disease

There are four types of Jaundice:

  • Pre-Hepatic Jaundice
  • Hepatic Jaundice
  • Post-Hepatic Jaundice
  • Neo-Natal Jaundice

Production and Metabolism of Bilirubin

It is a tetrapyrrole pigment, which is a breakdown product of heme.

About around 80-85% of the 4mg/kg body weight of bilirubin produced daily is a breakdown of the hemoglobin in senescent RBCs.

Remainder- from erythroid cells in bone marrow and turnover of hematoproteins, such as myoglobin and cytochromes that are found in the tissues throughout the person’s body.

Imaging Modalities

Medical imaging modalities for the following:

Differential diagnosis

The yellow discoloration of patient’s skin, especially on patients palms and soles of the patient, due to the cause carotenemiathis is considered to be harmless condition

Complications of Jaundice

High level of patient’s bilirubin could be toxic and also lead to the rare type of the brain damage; this is called kernicterus in some infants.

Treatment of Jaundice

The Treatment would depend on the patients underlying cause in jaundice disease.

  • Warm baths
  • Take the drug antihistamines for mild pruritis.
  • For moderate to even severe pruritis, drugs such as cholestyramine or colestipol are used.
  • In some cases, irreparable damage to the kidneys could also lead to the need for Liver Transplant.
