Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and jaundice. Most people recover from acute hepatitis B within a few months. People with some health conditions such as immune compromise are not able to clear the HBV from the body resulting in Chronic Hepatitis B. It is a long-term infection that can last for years or even a lifetime. Chronic Hepatitis B causes various liver problems such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer such as Hepatocellular cancer. You should consider getting tested for hepatitis B virus (HBV) if you are at risk for infection or if you have symptoms of the disease.
Who is at Risk of Infection?
- Being born should get tested if the mother has HBV infection.
- Having unprotected sex with someone who has HBV.

Note: Some people with HBV infection maynot show any symptoms and may not know they are infected. HBV DNA Qualitative Real-time PCR: Is a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic test method that uses fluorescent probes such as the TaqMan probe for the detection of even a very low amount of HBV virus genetic material in blood samples.
Procedure for HBVDNA Qualitative Real-time PCR Test
- Sample Collection: Blood Sample drawn in EDTA Tube from the vein of the patient’s arm.

- DNA isolation: DNA is isolated from Blood samples using fully automated Nucleic acid extraction machines. After that HBV DNA is amplified with the help of a Real-Time PCR machine.
- Real-time PCR: In Real-Time PCR, whole DNA isolated from the patient blood sample is amplified for a specific HBV DNA sequence and detected amplified HBV DNA in real-time as it is produced with the help of fluorescent probes.
- Result Analysis: The doctor will analyze the Real-Time PCR graph and Ct value to check whether the HBV DNA is amplified or not, which concludes the positive or Negative result for HBV. Finally, the Report is authenticated and released.
HBV DNA Qualitative Real-time PCR Test Result Analysis
Qualitative HBV Real-time PCR detects the presence or absence of HBV DNAin a sample. HBV DNA PCR qualitative test normal range is reported as Positive/Detected and Negative/Not Detected for HBV.
- Positive / Detected result Mean: A positive result means that HBV DNA is present in the blood sample. The positive result report will also mention the HBV Ct value. The lower Ct value means a higher viralamount in the blood and the patient is likely to have an active HBV infection. A lower Ct value is associated with a greater risk of liver damage by HBV infection.
- Negative Result: A negative result means that HBV DNA is not detected in the blood sample. This can indicate either that the person is not infected with HBV or that the viral load is too low to be detected by the test. In some cases, a negative result can also be caused by the presence of inhibitors in the sample that interfere with the PCR reaction.
Note: Real-time PCR is a sensitive and specific test for detecting HBV DNA, but it should not be used as the sole diagnostic tool for HBV infection. Other tests, such as the HBsAg test and anti-HBc test, may also be needed to confirm the diagnosis and monitor the progression of the disease.
