What is CCP Antibody Test?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic auto-immune disease. It is a multisystem disorder involving the skin, heart, lungs, eyes, nerves, blood vessels and blood cells but primarily affect the joints.
In this condition, our immune system starts forming auto-antibodies that attack the joints and other parts of the body resulting in various presentations, especially chronic inflammation and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis is usually seen in middle age (4th-5th decade) and is 2.5 times more common in women than men.
Anti-CCP antibody test is a specific test for rheumatoid arthritis. It is used for the detection of antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) in blood/plasma. It is more specific than rheumatoid factor (RF).
Although, anti-CCP is detected in majority of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, a negative result does not exclude rheumatoid arthritis and arthritis if present is called seronegative arthritis.
Anti-CCP test allows the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis at an early stage and sometimes even before the symptoms began to appear.
