An MRI scan for the brain is a painless and effective diagnostic tool to view clear images of the inside structures of your head- mainly the brain. Brain MRIs are used to view, evaluate, diagnose and monitor several different...
MRI full form magnetic resonance imaging scan. The MRI scan produces very clear images of the structures inside of the brain, using large magnets, radio waves and a computer. It dose no use any radiation. MRI is currently the most sensitive imaging test of your head as compared to other imaging techniques such as CT or X rays.
Why Is The Test Performed?
The Advantages of MRI scan is that it can be used to diagnose and monitor diseases and disorders that affect the brain including-
- Birth defects
- Bleedings - Subarachnoid, subdural or epidural bleed, or bleeding in the brain tissue itself
- Infection such as brain abscess
- Tumours including cancerous and noncancerous
- Hormonal disorders such as acromegaly, galactorrhoea , cushing syndrome etc.
- Multiple sclerosis
- Stroke
MRI head can also help determine the cause of-
- Dementia
- Vision problems
- Hearing loss
- Headaches when certain other symptoms or signs are present
- Changes in thinking or behaviour
- Muscle weakness or numbness and tingling
- Speech difficulties
- Brain hemorrage
- Brain infection or encephalitis
- Brain damage associated with epilepsy.
What to Prepare Before Brain MRI?
- You may eat or drink normally as before unless otherwise advised
- You might be advised to get some blood tests done prior to the MRI scan eg- creatinine tests
- You should tell your care provider if you have any metal device inside your body for eg.- cardiac pacemaker,
- Middle ear prosthesis
- Cochlear implant
- Vagal nerve stimulator
- Metal fragments in your head or within your eyeball
- A clip used for brain aneurysm
- Cochlear implant
- In addition you should tell your care provider if you are pregnant
- You should inform prior if you are unable to lay down on your back for 30-60 minutes
- If you are claustrophobic (have fear of closed and narrow spaces
How The Test Feels?
- If you are injected a contrast dye, you might feel prick pain
- MRI scan is a pain free scan. But might get nervous or may have a problem lying, so you may be given medicine to control anxiety. Too much movement can blur the images and cause errors.
- As you are lying on a table, you might feel it cold.
- The MRI Scan Machine usually make loud thumping and humming noise while operation, you will be given earplugs to help reduce the noise
- You are usually alone whil;e scanning but you are watched by the technician from a window in a nearby room, also if you feel you need to talk whil;e the p[rocedure, there is an intercom facility available.
- There is no recovery time usually, you may resume your routine eating or drink or medicines right away after the exam, unless otherwise guided.
Risks
- The MRI head scan uses strong magnetic fields that can make heart pacemakers and other implants to not work well after the scan. It can also cause a piece of metal or metal device inside of your body to move or shift from its originally placed position.
- As far as the radiation effect is concerned, MRI doesn't use any radiation. To date, no side effects from the magnetic fields or radio waves that MRI scan uses have been reported.
- Sometimes a contrast medium is used while doing MRI scanning, the most common type of contrast (dye) used is gadolinium. It is very safe. Allergic reactions to this substance rarely occur. However, gadolinium can be harmful to the people who are already having kidney problems, especially those who are on dialysis. If you have kidney problems, it is better that you should tell your healthcare provider before the test.
