What is a Cardiac doppler?
Our heart is a vital organ, responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It has four chambers namely:
- Right atrium
- Right ventricle
- Left atrium
- Left ventricle
A cardiac doppler or doppler echocardiography is an imaging technique that uses doppler ultrasound for the assessment and evaluation of heart. It utilizes high frequency sound waves to delineate the anatomical details of the heart along with details of blood flow through it in real time such as speed, direction of blood flow, flow turbulence as well as patency of blood vessels.
Color doppler echocardiography also known as color flow doppler utilizes sound waves which are reflected by moving blood cells such as RBCs. These reflected sound waves are then recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into different colors using a computer.
It is a fast, painless, non-invasive and safe technique for evaluation and assessment of the heart. It is used for the screening, diagnosis, evaluation and monitoring of various conditions affecting the heart and associated blood vessels and the pathologies of vascular origin.
What are the uses of cardiac doppler echocardiography?
Cardiac doppler echocardiography is an effective and fast imaging tool that is used for the analysis, diagnosis and evaluation of a variety of conditions affecting the heart and the blood vessels including:
- Coronary artery disease
- Evaluation of valves of the heart
- Evaluation of functioning of ventricles
- Valvular regurgitation
- Evaluation of blood flow to the heart
- Abnormal communication between the right and left chambers of the heart
- Evaluation of cardiac output
- Cardiac tumours
- Cardiac enlargement
- Evaluation of speed of blood flow through the heart
- Evaluation of blood flow pattern through the heart
- Preload of the heart
- Afterload of the heart
- Pericardial effusion
- Compression of heart
- Any obstruction to blood flow
- Atherosclerosis
- Abnormalities of Aorta
- Cardiomyopathy
- Heart failure
- Congenital heart diseases
- Pericarditis
- Aneurysms
- Cardiac tamponade
- Before surgical approach to the heart
- Post-operative monitoring of the heart and blood vessels etc.
How do I prepare for a Cardiac doppler scan?
Follow these simple steps if you are going for a Cardiac doppler scan:
- Take an appointment: Fix an appointment in a diagnostic center having the facility of Cardiac Color Doppler ultrasound or doppler echocardiography.
- Clothing: Dress yourself in loose and comfortable outfits so that your body parts that need to be scanned can be easily assessed.
- Food and medications: You can follow your daily routine unless otherwise specified by your doctor. Fasting is not required for cardiac doppler scan.
- Hygiene: Maintain hygiene and do not apply oils or creams over the area which need to be examined.
- Reports: Carry your relevant medical lab reports and prescription of your doctor while going for a Color doppler ultrasound. These may help in better evaluation of your condition.
- Smoking/Tobacco: Avoid smoking or tobacco chewing before the test as nicotine in these substances may case vasoconstriction which may alter the test results
What is the procedure for cardiac color doppler test?
The procedure for Cardiac Doppler ultrasound may involve the following steps:
- Before the scan begins you need to remove ornaments and clothes from the body to expose the chest region which is being evaluated.
- A technician may measure your blood pressure.
- You will be then asked to lie on the examination table.
- Your Radiologist will then apply gel/lubricant over your chest region for better transmission of sound waves and smooth gliding of probe over the chest surface.
- Then a hand-held transducer/probe will be moved over the chest surface which sends high frequency sound waves to the body parts. These sound waves are reflected by the moving blood cells such RBCs and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs of different colors revealing parameters such as direction, speed of blood flow and flow pattern in real time.
- These images will be interpreted to evaluate your condition
- At the end of procedure, tissue paper will be provided to clean the gel/lubricant from the body surface. You will be allowed to leave once the imaging is over.
What happens after a Cardiac doppler ultrasound?
- Cardiac Doppler usually takes about 30 minutes. However, it may last longer depending the severity of condition and the associated co-morbid conditions.
- You will be allowed to leave immediately after the test.
- After the scanning is over, your Radiologist will evaluate the result and make a diagnosis of your condition.
- You will get the report on the same day.
- This report will be analyzed by your doctor to make a proper management plan for your condition.
- Cardiac Color doppler is a safe and painless procedure with no risk or side effects.
