Carotid arteries are large arteries situated in the neck region. There are two carotid arteries, one on each side of neck. The carotid arteries and their branches are the major blood vessels suppling the vital areas such as brain, eye and face region.
A carotid doppler ultrasound is a diagnostic test that is used for the assessment and evaluation of carotid blood vessels in the neck region.
Color doppler ultrasound also known as color flow doppler utilizes sound waves which are reflected by moving blood cells such as RBCs. These reflected sound waves are then captured by the ultrasound machine and converted into different colors using a computer, depicting real time speed, direction of blood flow, flow turbulence as well as patency of blood vessels.
It is a fast, painless, non-invasive and safe tool for mapping blood flow through the carotid arteries. It is used for the screening, diagnosis, evaluation and monitoring of various conditions affecting the carotid vessels and the pathologies of vascular origin especially stenosis, aneurysms and stroke.

What is the procedure for carotid color doppler test?
The procedure for Carotid Color Doppler scan may involve the following steps:
- Before the scan begins you need to remove jewellary and clothes from your body to expose the neck region.
- Your assisting technician may measure your blood pressure.
- You will be then asked to lie on the examination table.
- A technician will position your head and neck for optimum scanning.
- Your Radiologist will then apply a special gel/lubricant over your neck area for effective transmission of sound waves and smooth gliding of probe over the neck.
- Then a hand-held transducer/probe will be moved over the skin of your neck which sends high frequency sound waves to the neck region. These sound waves are reflected by the moving blood cells such RBCs and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs of different colors depicting the blood flow pattern, direction and speed of blood flow in real-time. These images will be interpreted to assess your condition.
- At the end of scan, tissue paper will be provided to clean the gel/lubricant from your neck area.
What happens after a Carotid doppler ultrasound?
- Carotid doppler Ultrasound/USG test usually takes about 15-30 minutes. However, it may last longer depending the severity of your condition and the associated co-morbid conditions.
- You will be allowed to leave soon after the scan.
- After the procedure got over, your Sonographer will analyze the result and make a report of your existing conditions.
- You will get the reports on the same day.
- These reports will be evaluated by your health care professional to identify the underlying abnormality and make a proper management plan for your current situation.
