Chest CT scan also known as computed tomography scan or Lungs CT scan is a diagnostic technique in radio-imaging which utilizes special rotating X-rays machine and computer to generate cross-sectional images of chest/lungs.

What is Chest CT scan?

Chest CT scan also known as computed tomography scan or Lungs CT scan is a diagnostic technique in radio-imaging which utilizes special rotating X-rays machine and computer to generate cross-sectional images of chest/lungs.

It is a rapid, non-invasive, painless, safe and accurate tool commonly used for the identification and diagnosis of congenital as well as acquired diseases/disorders of lungs such as pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases and chronic lung diseases, especially early detection of lung tumors.

A CT scanner produces series of lung images/slices for identification, localization and evaluation of many lung diseases and even very small lung lesions/nodules can be detected on CT scan. It can also generate three-dimensional images of lungs for better assessment of lung and airways abnormalities. It generates much more information than traditional X-rays.

A CT scan can be done with contrast dye known as CECT Chest or without contrast material known as NCCT Chest. A HRCT chest scan produces slices even thinner than a standard CT scans for evaluation of very fine details of lungs.

What happens after a chest CT scan?

* You will be allowed to exit the scanner room once the procedure is over.

* You may be asked to wait in observation room for some time to evaluate any possible side effects if contrast dye has been used.

* Drink water to eliminate contrast material from your body.

* CT scan of chest usually takes about 20-30 minutes. However, it may last longer depending upon the severity of your illness and associated co-morbid conditions.

* If you breastfeed your baby then ask your Radiologist or Physician when to resume breastfeed post injection of contrast agent.

* You will get reports on the next day. However, you may get the image films on the same day if requested by your Clinician.

What are the side effects/risks of chest CT scan?

Chest CT scan/test is a safe procedure. The radiation in CT scan is low and the contrast dye doesn’t stay for longtime in your body. Drinking water can help to flush the contrast faster from your body.

However, some concerns about Chest CT scan are as follows:

1) Allergic reactions to contrast dye, although rare but can happen in some individuals. However, these allergic reactions are usually mild.

2) Contrast induced nephropathy may occur in some individuals specially those with kidney disease.

3) Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should avoid certain medications and test for the safety of baby. Ask your Doctor before undergoing a Chest CT scan.

4) Exposure to radiation and increased risk of cancer with multiple scans especially in those with high risk factors.
