What are Cryoglobulins?
Cryoglobulins are those proteins that would become insoluble at reduced temperatures.
These proteins are known to cause inflammation and also damage blood vessels, which can further affect various organs including the following:
What is Cryoglobulin Test Panel?
The Cryoglobulin Panel Test is known to be a blood test that would help to detect and also classify any abnormal proteins that are called cryoglobulins in the bloodstream.
The test involves Immunofixation electrophoresis technique, which further helps in classification of the cryoglobulins based on their specific composition.
The Cryoglobulins are seen to be associated with several conditions. Some of them are listed below:
- Hepatitis C
- Autoimmune Diseases
- Multiple Myeloma
- Certain Infections.
The Cryoglobulin Panel Test is vital in diagnosis and monitoring of all these disorders.
Why is Cryoglobulin Test done?
Cryoglobulins can be detected by the Cryoglobulin lab test.
They are the circulating proteins, specifically immunoglobulin (IgG, IgM, IgA, or light chains) that usually clump together (precipitate) when they are exposed to the cold temperatures and they also dissolve when warmed.
They also have the ability to cause inflammation and damage the blood vessels and many internal organs.
This test also aids the doctors to understand the underlying cause of the patient’s symptoms, as mentioned below:
Guidelines to follow before, during and after the test
Here are some guidelines an individual can refer to once they have decided to undergo Cryoglobulin Test Panel
The required documents needed for this test includes your valid government ID and an appropriate Doctor’s prescription.
Before the Test
- Nothing Specific to prepare for the Cryoglobulin Test Panel in advance.
- Fasting: Some laboratories demand that you go without food or liquids for 8 hours before the test.
- For other Tests being conducted together, you may have to fast for several hours prior to the test.
During the Test
Method: When blood is drawn, it is called “venipuncture”
- At the test center, you would be requested to sit comfortably on the chair or even lie down on the cot.
- In case of long sleeve clothing, roll up sleeve of one end or remove the arm from the sleeve of the clothing.
- A healthcare provider, or a technician/nurse, would tie band made of rubber tightly on your upper arm.
- Once an appropriate vein is found, a needle is inserted below the skin to take the sample of about 2ml.
A short sharp prick may be felt when needle puncture is made under the skin, to collect the blood sample.
After the test
- After the blood is withdrawn, the respective technician/ healthcare professional would withdraw the needle.
- Place pressure on puncture wound to stop the bleeding. A small bandage may also be put on the wound.
- You would be able to return on your usual routine immediately.
Result Interpretation
The presence along with the type of cryoglobulins in blood can be used to indicate specific conditions. These are defined as Type I, Type II and Type III respectively.
Type I: This is often associated with any lymphoproliferative disorders.
Type II and Type III: These are often associated with the autoimmune diseases and infections. For example, hepatitis C.
Based on your test results, your healthcare professional may redirect you to the specialists such as:
- Rheumatologist
- Hematologist,
- Any Other Infectious Disease Specialist.
This completely depends on the test results and also the suspected underlying condition.
Normal Values in a Healthy Individual
The Cryoglobulins in general do not have any consensus reference range.
The Serum cryoglobulins in most individuals are present in low concentrations i.e. (100-300 mg/L) among the high concentrations, the values are (60,000-80,000 mg/L) of normal serum proteins.
