FNAC stands for Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology. It is a procedure of detecting lumps, swelling or abnormal tissues in various parts of the body. This is a minimal test procedure which helps in early detection of inflammation, infection and even cancerous growths.   • If you take blood thinners, consult and inform your doctor before the test.
  • Then the doctor will clean the skin over the lump area with an antiseptic.
  • A thin hollow needle will be inserted in the lump to collect the sample.
  • The sample will be placed on a slide and for further examination it will go to the laboratory.
  • After the test, you may or may not feel pain.
  • After the test day, you can continue your day to day activities. 

How to read the FNAC test result?

The FNAC test result will be out within a few days or a week. This test result will fall into three categories- 

  • Benign-  It means Non cancerous, indicates no sign of cancer.
  • Malignant- It means cancerous cells are present and need further examination and test for better understanding of the diseases.
  • Indeterminate- The sample may be inconclusive, required biopsy.
