Encephalitis is defined as an inflammation of the brain, caused either by infection, usually with a virus, or from a primary autoimmune process.
The infectious process in meningitis, it is associated inflammatory response are largely limited to meninges, in encephalitis the brain parenchyma is also involved.
Many patients with encephalitis also have evidence of associated meninges (memingoencephlaitis)
And in some cases, even the spinal cord or the nerve roots.
Key Facts:
- Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a flavivirus related to dengue, yellow fever and West Nile viruses, and is spread by mosquitoes.
- JEV is main cause of the viral encephalitis in many of the countries of Asia with an estimated 68 000 clinical cases each year.
- Although the symptomatic Japanese encephalitis (JE) is considered rare, the case-fatality rate among encephalitis patients could be as high as 30%.
- The permanent neurologic or the psychiatric sequel can occur in 30%–50% of those suffering from encephalitis.
Signs and symptoms
The Adults suffering from encephalitis present with the following symptoms:
In the younger children or infants, the following symptoms are seen:
- Irritability
- Poor Appetite
- Fever
The Neurological examinations mostly reveal findings in a drowsy or a confused person.
They could also experience Stiff neck, due to irritation of your meninges that are covering your brain; this further indicates that patient is either suffering from meningitis or meningoencephalitis

Diagnosis
A Spinal tap on the newborn
The People should be diagnosed with the disease of encephalitis incase, they have decreased or an altered level of consciousness, further feeling lethargy, or leading to personality change for about twenty-four hours without any particular or explainable cause.
The scan/tests that are used here are as follows:
- Brain scan by MRI can lead to inflammation detection and also differentiate it from other possible causes.
- CT
- EEG
- Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
- Blood test
- Urine analysis
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of your CSF or cerebrospinal fluid
- Brain Biopsy
- CSF Culture
Transmission
The JEV is further transmitted to the humans through bites from an infected mosquito of Culex species (Culex tritaeniorhynchus).
The Humans that have been infected before would usually not develop any sufficient viraemia to infect the feeding mosquitoes.
This virus exists in the transmission cycle between your mosquitoes, in pigs and/or the water birds (enzootic cycle).
Moreover, the disease is known to be predominantly found in the rural and the periurban settings, where the humans have been living in closer proximity to the vertebrate hosts.
Treatment
The treatment for the encephalitis focuses on treating an underlying causes and also alleviating the symptoms.
The Treatment options include the following:
- Corticosteroids
- Antiviral medication
- Antibiotics
- Antifungal medications
- Anticonvulsants
- Surgery: Incase of tumor or other growth.
- Immunoglobulin therapy
