Cardiac PET scan full form is Cardiac Positron emission tomography scan. Cardiac PET scan is an imaging technique where health care provider creates images of your heat and can use these images to make decisions about the steps in your heart care. These image scan also reveal a lot about the health of your heart. By looking and studying these images your doctor can judge how healthy your heart muscles are so as to decide how to treat it. Cardiac PET scan is a noninvasive and an accurate technique that uses small amount of radiations.

How is the Test Performed?

PET scan is done using a small amount of radioactive material known as tracer.

How is the Test Performed

  • This tracer is administered in a vein (iv), most often on the inside vein in your elbow
  • The tracer travels through your vessels and blood and gets collected in organs and tissues, including your heart.
  • The tracer helps the radiologist to see certain areas of disease more clearly.

Once the tracer is administered it takes 1 hour to get absorbed, you need to wait for the meanwhile.

Then you will need to lay on a narrow table, which slides into a large funnel-shaped scanner

  • Electrodes for an ECG (echocardiogram) will be placed on your chest. The PET scanner detects signals from the tracer administered.
  • Computer is used to change these signals into a 3D picture.
  • The images are then displayed on a monitor for the radiologist to read and study them.

You  need to lie stable and still during the PET scan so that the imgaes produced are clear. The test usually takes about 90 minutes.

What Happens After PET Scan?

  • The care provider removes the IV from your arm or hand after the scan is done.
  • You change your gown and dress back your own clothes and jewels.
  • You can resume your normal activities faster the scan immediately
  • Make sure to drink a lot of water after the scan for 24 hours to help wash off the tracer that was administered into your system.
  • Someone will need to drive you back home if you were given a sedative

When Does Someone Need a PET Scan?

A doctor recommends a PET Scan can of your heart when they need to know-

  • If you have a diseased heart muscle
  • If you have cardiac stenosis
  • If you have cardiac sarcoidosis
  • Is a procedure could help you
  • If you have CAD- Cardiac Artery Disease
  • Which areas in your heart don’t have a good blood flow
  • To examine how much damage is caused after a heart attack
  • How well your cardiac treatment is working
  • What exact health your heart is before the procedure
  • To reveal and know the size, shape, position, and some functions of the heart

How Does the Scan Feel?

When  the tracer is administered you might feel a prick ting

PET scan has no pain typically, but the table that you have to lie on might feel hard and cold for which you can request a blanket or a pillow.

You have to be alone in the scanning room unless you request the provider for someone family member to stay or If you are a child your parent can stay with you inside the scanning room. But the person that stays with you also need to follow dressing protocols as you.

There is no recovery time, you can continue your life after the scan immediately unless you were given any sedative.

What Does Normal and Abnormal Test Result Mean?

For abnormal test results, the results might be due to:

The abnormal results are indicated as the tracer is abnormally collected in some parts of heart indicating that part to be abnormal

For normal test results, there are no areas in which the radiotracer has abnormally collected also there would be no abnormality detected in the size, shape, or function of heart.

Risks

Risks of PET Scan

Risks associated with PET scan are very unlikely as it uses same amount of radiation as CT which as within standard tolerable limits. Also the radiations don’t take much time to stay in your body.

If you are pregnant or feel you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should let your provider know its priory. Since unborn children and infants are more sensitive toward radiation, in such cases scan is not done unless indicated by the physician.

It is possible but less likely for you to develop an allergic reaction to the radioactive substance. Some people have pain, redness or swelling at the injection site.

What is Full Form of PET Scan?

PET scan stands for Positron emission tomography. It uses small amount of radioactivity while providing improved accuracy, less radiation and increased efficiency in detection of heart diseases compared to other modes.

What Are the Drawbacks of PET Scan?

The only drawback of PET scan is that the images produced by the scan are substantially lower in resolution than Ct and MRI scan but it has been improved by using hybrid techniques where we can use PET with CT and PET with MRI scans.
