Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that causes fatal health problems.

Hepatitis is the second major killer infectious disease, causing 1.4 million deaths a year. There is an urgent need to make people aware of the Hepatitis, as it is preventable and treatable disease. Hepatitis can be caused by- Viral Hepatitis, alcoholic Hepatitis, Autoimmune hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis and Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Hepatitis is a serious disorder that can damage the liver function and, if untreated can lead to complications such as cirrhosis, which is severe scarring of the liver and liver cancer.

To solve the mystery of hepatitis, the disease is diagnosed with some combination of diagnostic tests like- blood test, imaging test (X-ray, CT scan and MRI Scan) and liver biopsy

Types of Hepatitis

There are many types of hepatitis – Broadly divided into infectious and non-infectious hepatitis.

Infectious Hepatitis

It is caused by an infection with a virus, bacteria, fungus or parasites. Among all Viral hepatitis is most common, caused by an infection with one of several hepatitis viruses.

Five types of viral hepatitis are:-

Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis A caused by Hepatitis A virus (HAV)
  • Spread easily through contaminated stool or blood from infected person, water, sexual contact or through shared needles.
Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis B is caused by Hepatitis B virus (HBV)
  • Hepatitis B virus can cause acute or chronic hepatitis
  • Virus can be spread through contact – blood or through other body fluids and it can also transfer from mother to her baby.
  • Sources of infection are contaminated needles, syringes, blood products, homosexual men and more common in HIV cases.
  • hepatitis B infection may last upto 6 months or more
  • Hepatitis B virus is the main cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide.
Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)  Is A RNA virus

It can be transmitted through one person to another through blood or blood products, unprotected sex and contaminated needles ( I.V needle drug abusers or patients with renal dialysis).

Hepatitis D

Hepatitis D Virus (HDV), also known as delta hepatitis

Mostly uccur in individual who already infected with Hepatitis B virus

Spread through Blood or body fluids from infected person

Hepatitis E

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is also RNA virus

Source of infection transmission – contaminated water, poor sanitation and hepatitis E virus also spread from animal to people when consuming undercooked foods like pork or wild animals.

Hepatitis can also occur due to other types of virus and these are-

Cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, and the herpes simplex virus.

Non infectious Hepatitis

There are many conditions that can non infectious hepatitis, these are-

Alcoholic hepatitis

It occurs due to long term and heavy use of alcohol

Toxic hepatitis

Toxic hepatitis occurs due to drugs that can cause liver damage such as anabolic steroids, herbal supplements for long term use, certain medications, birth control pills, NSAIDS and medications containing acetaminophen.

Autoimmune hepatitis

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic form of hepatitis in which a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in the liver.

Testing and Diagnosis of Hepatitis

Purpose for hepatitis tests are- diagnosis of hepatitis, screening of hepatitis, evaluation of liver, and the underlying causes of hepatitis.

When healthcare professional suspect a patient has hepatitis after complete evaluation of medical history and physical exam, than he will order a diagnostic tests for confirmation.

Screening Test

Screening test for hepatitis are recommended for people who are more prone to develop hepatitis, pregnant women, HIV positive patients , users of injectable drugs, and people with higher risk of HBV infection due to certain sexual practice.

Antibody Tests

Antibodies test for hepatitis detects the presence of antibodies the immune system produces to attack the virus.

Commonly seen in patients who have been vaccinated against Hepatitis virus specially HBV, HAV and HCV.

Direct Viral Measures

Polymerase chain reaction or PCR test is used to measure the amount of virus in the blood of an infected individual.

Imaging

Imaging test is used to detect the damage caused by the virus. It is not used to detect the virus.

With the help of diagnostic imaging technique detection of changes in size, presence of inflammation, swelling and tumors can be detected which may occur due to chronic infection of liver disease. Types of imaging techniques used to detect the consequences of chronic infection or liver disease are-

  • X ray chest
  • Abdominal Ultrasound
  • Abdominal CT Scan
  • MRI Scan
  • Biopsy

A liver biopsy is used to detect the level of damage occurs due to hepatitis and helps in treatment planning.

Treatment of Hepatitis

No herbs, supplements or other alternative therapy is known that works on liver healing in hepatitis. Although progression cirrhosis is more likely in severe than in mild or moderate hepatitis. Treatment of hepatitis is depending on causative agent.

Medicines are being prescribed by doctor to control detiorating symptoms of hepatitis.

Anti-viral therapies for viral hepatitis include drugs like - lamivudine, adefovir, entecavir, etc.

Inferferon - Alpha - for HBeAg positive carriers with chronic active hepatitis.

In case of excessive damage to liver from hepatitis the only treatment that will help is liver transplant
