What is a Kidney?
Kidney is a group of organs that reside within the abdominal cavity. Kidney is a significant organ that helps in removing wastes and cleaning the blood. This helps in keeping the chemicals in check as well. Kidneys also secrete hormones, which help in regulating blood pressure and exciting the bone marrow to produce more.
What Are the Various Types of Kidney Diseases?
There are a number of types of Kidney disease based on etiology and severity of illness. They are listed below.
List of kidney diseases:
Polycystic Kidney disease (PKD)
Polycystic Kidney disease is due to fluid-filled cysts. Polycystic Kidney disease is a form of genetic disorder caused by gene-carrying mutation. The disease deteriorates the filtering capacity of kidneys and cannot be treated till date. Some medicines, however, are capable of inhibiting cyst growth. PKD is a highly fatal disease, which includes dialysis or kidney transplant in patients.
Kidney Stones
Calcium, oxalate or uric acid deposition in the kidney after some period of time creates kidney stones. The symptom of kidney stones is a frequent complaint of the majority of patients against the kidney. Kidney stones can lead to pain in groin, pain in abdomen, dysuria or painful micturition, or offensive urine. It can be treated by increased fluid intake and drugs. If the size of the stones is big, then only status is managed.
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI).
This is also known as acute renal failure resulting in injury of the kidney due to failure. This is acute loss of renal function and results in severe medical illness. AKI may be caused due to infection of the kidneys or lack of blood supply to the kidneys. There are several symptoms depending on the status of AKI such as face, hands or feet swelling, coma, convulsion, reduction of the volume of urine etc.
IgA nephropathy
Also known as Berger disease, it is an immune-mediated renal disease. Clinical features include hematuria (blood in urine), BP (high blood pressure), facial edema and urine color change such as edema. No definite treatment of the disease but some medications can slow down the disease process.
LUPUS Nephritis
It is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks its own kidney.
This state is an obstruction to the kidney in attaining filtering out the toxin and blocks the route for kidney functioning. This state is avoided by timely administration of the medicine and dietary control. It is in the case of a chronic disease patient with lupus nephritis who was undergoing dialysis and also received a kidney transplant. Its symptoms are water, swelling, swollen joints, fever without cause, and rashes, etc.
Other renal diseases:
- Anti-GBM (Goodpasture's) disease
- Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (MPGN)
- Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (HSP)
- Diabetic nephropathy
- Alport syndrome
- Amyloidosis
- Interstitial nephritis

Some of them include polycystic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, nephrosis etc. There are some signs and degree of the condition for each condition. Some investigations to determine the condition of the disease such as KFT, MRI kidneys, CT, USG etc. are being undertaken.
