What is KFT?
Kidney Function Tests include a series of biochemical serological tests which aim to examine substances that act as biomarkers in blood for kidney function and health. KFT measures the efficiency of kidneys in eliminating waste from the body.
The substances measured in a kidney function test include:
Electrolytes (sodium and potassium)
Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (Est. GFR)
Why is KFT done?
Healthy functioning kidneys are responsible for removal of toxic substances and wastes from the blood through urine. Kidneys are vital in maintaining healthy state of the body.
Kidney-related conditions usually don’t have profound symptoms initially. Hence, KFT done as a part of routine health checkups can give an indication towards declining health of kidneys or the onset of a condition.
This test has specific parameters which are assessed in order to comprehend the health of kidneys.
Other vital functions of kidneys are:
- Production of Erythropoietin and Thrombopoietin, which are important growth factors involved in hematopoietic process
- Production of certain hormones that help in maintaining blood pressure
- Vitamin D production for maintaining bones (bone mineral metabolism) and muscles health
- Maintaining acid-base balance in the body
- Maintaining mineral balance in the body
- Maintaining fluid balance in the body
When do I need KFT?
Your doctor will recommend a kidney function test if you have the following symptoms:
- More frequent urination than usual
- Painful urination
- Burning sensation while urination
- Problems in initiating urination
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Back pain
- Abnormal colored urine
- The foamy appearance of urine
- Blood in urine
- Anemia
- Weakness
- Elevated Blood Pressure
- Swelling in hands and feet
- Puffiness around eyes and on face
- Family history of kidney disorders
- Progress of treatment of kidney disorders
What are the parameters of KFT?
The following substances/ parameters are checked in blood for analysis of kidney functioning:
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
Urea nitrogen is a metabolic product of protein degradation in the body. It is one of the many waste products that kidneys excrete from the body through urine.
Elevated levels of BUN is an indication of kidney malfunctioning. It should be noted that this elevation can also happen as a result of some medication.
Serum Uric Acid
Uric acid is a metabolic byproduct of purine degradation in the body. When our body breaks down organic compounds, uric acid is produced. Uric acid is removed by the body through urine.
Elevated or declined levels of uric acid in blood are an indication of kidney malfunction, though declining levels are not that significant clinically.
Serum Creatinine
Creatinine is a metabolic byproduct of muscle activity in the body. Creatinine in blood is filtered by kidneys and excreted out of the body through urine. Kidneys continuously eliminate creatinine from the body; hence body maintains a low level of creatinine in the blood.
Therefore, elevated levels of creatinine if found in blood sample, imply some problem with kidneys.
Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (Est. GFR)
It is a ‘gold standard measurement’ in assessing kidney’s health. Glomerular Filtration Rate is estimated by analyzing factors such as:
- Serum Creatinine
- Age
- Gender
- Race
- Body size
Serum Calcium
Calcium is an important mineral that has many functions in the body such as:
- Maintenance of bone and teeth health
- Helps in blood clotting
- Contraction and relaxation of muscles
- Has role in cardiovascular functioning
Too high levels of calcium in blood add stress on kidneys during filtration but kidney failure like complication occurs more commonly in case of very low levels of calcium in serum as compared to very high levels.
BUN/Creatinine ratio
A healthy individual has higher levels of BUN in serum as compared to Creatinine levels in serum.
Therefore, the desired ratio is from 10:1 to 20:1.
Electrolytes such as potassium and sodium
Sodium and potassium both are derived from diet and are important for proper functioning of body.
Measuring the levels of electrolytes in blood helps in estimation of water and pH balance in the body.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
What is normal range for KFT test parameters?
The ranges for normal values for various parameters of KFT vary from lab to lab. It also varies depending on age and gender. Though the variation is not that big, but it is still there. Diagnostic labs mention the biological reference range along with the findings of the patient’s sample. Those ranges can be referred by the patients to assess the elevated or declined levels of KFT of their sample. In order to make correct diagnosis based on the report, consult your doctor!
Following is a range of normal values for LFT parameters, which can be referred:
KFT parameter Normal Range
BUN 7-25mg/dL
Uric Acid 3.7-9.2mg/dL
Creatinine 0.74-1.35mg/dL (male)
0.59-1.04mg/dL (female)
BUN/Creatinine ratio 10:1 to 20:1
Est. GFR >60
Calcium 8.8-10.6 mg/dL
How is KFT performed?
Blood sample is required for performing kidney function test. A phlebotomist will sterilize the area on your arm where a vein is visible. He will insert the needle and extract required amount of blood sample. The sample is labeled properly to avoid intermixing of samples. The sample is transported to the lab while observing all safety precautions for testing.
How to prepare for KFT?
Fasting – fasting is not required before giving blood sample for kidney function test
Diet – heavy food consumption should be avoided, only light food items that are easy to digest should be consumed. Meat and fish should be avoided as these food items can influence creatinine levels in body.
Medications – certain medications such as NSAIDs and diuretics etc. should be avoided before getting KFT because these medications can affect the results.
Are there any risks involved in getting KFT?
There are no risks involved in getting kidney function test done other than the sting of the needle which is there at the time of blood sample collection. It is a non-invasive method of examining kidney health and functioning, so it is safe.
