These tests are done to assess the functioning and health of liver. Various components of blood are analyzed in order to test the functioning of liver, such as enzymes, proteins, and metabolites.
What is LFT?
LFT stands for Liver Function Tests.
Other names for Liver Function Tests:
Hepatic Panel
Liver Panel
Liver Function Panel
Liver Profile
These tests are done to assess the functioning and health of liver. Various components of blood are analyzed in order to test the functioning of liver, such as enzymes, proteins and metabolites.
Higher or lower levels of these components serve as biomarkers for malfunctioning and damaged liver conditions. Based on the pattern of elevation or decline of components, differential analysis can be done for diagnosis of the part of liver getting damaged.
Why is LFT done?
Liver is an important organ for detoxification of harmful substances from the blood. It also plays a crucial role in body’s metabolism, glucose synthesis, glucose storage, and regulation of Red Blood Cells (RBCs), storage of vitamins and minerals, and protein synthesis.
LFT has various applications, such as:
- Diagnosis of infections in liver, such as Hepatitis infection
- Diagnosis of conditions that cause inflammation of liver
- Other conditions that cause liver damage, such as alcohol
- Helps in monitoring the effectiveness of medication and treatment
- Helps in monitoring progression of disease with time, such as scarring of liver in Cirrhosis
- Helps in monitoring side-effects of some drugs on liver
When do I need LFT?
General symptoms of liver malfunctioning include:
- Lack of appetite
- Chronic fatigue
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
Your doctor will prescribe you to get LFT done in the following conditions:
- If you have a family history of liver disease
- If you consume too much alcohol
- If you are taking heavy dose of medication which can potentially cause liver damage
- If you have Hepatitis
- If you have Jaundice symptoms
- To monitor effectiveness of treatment related to liver disease
- To check progression and extent of liver damage
- If you have medical conditions such as anemia, high blood pressure and diabetes
- If you have gall bladder disease
What are the parameters of LFT?
The parameters of LFT include certain enzymes, metabolites and proteins:
- AST (Aspartate Transaminase)/ SGOT
- ALT (Alanine Transaminase) /SGPT
- ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase)
- GGP (Gamma-glutamyltransferase)
- Total Protein
- Serum Albumin
- Serum Globulin
- Serum Albumin/Globulin Ratio
- PT (Prothrombin Time)
- Bilirubin Total
- Bilirubin Direct
- Bilirubin Indirect
What is normal range for LFT test parameters?
The ranges for normal values for various parameters of LFT test vary from lab to lab. Though the variation is not that big, but it is still there. Diagnostic labs mention the biological reference range along with the findings of the patient’s sample. Those ranges can be referred by the patients to assess the elevated or declined levels of LFT of their sample. In order to make correct diagnosis based on the report, consult your doctor!
Following is a range of normal values for LFT parameters, which can be referred:
LFT Parameter Normal Range
ALT < 36 U/L
AST < 30 U/L
ALP 30 – 130 U/L
GGT < 38 U/L
Bilirubin Total 0.1- 1.2 mg/dL
Bilirubin Direct < 0.3 mg/dL
Bilirubin Indirect 0-0.9 mg/dL
Serum Albumin 3.2-4.8 gm/dL
Serum Globulin 2.5-3.4 gm/dL
Serum Albumin/Globulin Ratio 0.9-2
Prothrombin Time 9.4-12.5 s
Total Protein 60-80 g/L
How is LFT performed?
A healthcare professional/ phlebotomist will sterilize the area on your arm where he/she will insert a needle to extract blood sample. He/she will extract required amount of blood from your arm (vein). The sample is labeled correctly to avoid intermixing of samples, and transported to the lab for testing.
How to prepare for LFT?
The following things should be kept in mind before getting LFT:
- Fasting is required 8-10 hours prior to giving blood sample for LFT.
- Consumption of heavy food should be avoided.
- Only water should be consumed 8-10 hours before giving blood sample.
- Medications that affect liver function should not be consumed. Let your doctor know about your medication and medical history, so that he/she can make an informed decision about what medicines should be avoided before LFT.
Are there any risks involved in getting LFT?
No, there are no risks involved in getting LFT. LFT is a non-invasive test. It is safe.
