What is Pelvis CT Scan?
The pelvis or the pelvic region is the lowermost part of your trunk, situated between your abdomen and the thighs. It includes:
1) Bony pelvis formed by a pair of hip bones, sacrum and coccyx
2) Space enclosed by the bony pelvis known as pelvic cavity
3) Contents of pelvic cavity such as reproductive organs, part of intestine and rectum
4) Pelvic floor/pelvic diaphragm below
5) Perineum.
Computed tomography scan of pelvis also known as pelvic CT scan or CT scan pelvis is a diagnostic test in radio-imaging used for the identification and evaluation of numerous disorders or conditions involving the pelvic region.
It utilizes rotating X-ray machines and a computer to produce cross-sectional images/slices for better detection and assessment of underlying conditions. 3D image construction is also possible with this technique making it superior to traditional X-rays.
CT scan pelvis may be performed with contrast (CECT pelvis) or without contrast (NCCT pelvis) and can be performed as a part of other imaging scans such as CT pelvic angiography, CT abdomen and pelvis.
What are the uses/purposes of pelvic CT scan?
CT scan pelvis is an advanced diagnostic test that can be used for detection, localization, diagnosis, and management and monitoring in a variety of disorders/conditions affecting bony pelvis or its contents including:
1) Pelvic fractures
2) Pelvic trauma
3) Pelvic tumours
4) Secondary metastases
5) To monitor treatment efficacy in case of pelvic tumours
6) Pelvic hemorrhage/hematoma
7) Pelvic infections
8) Pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID)
9) Pelvic abscess

18) Birth defects
19) To guide pelvic interventions such as biopsy or drainage
20) Pre-operative before surgical approach to the pelvis
21) Post-operative evaluation
22)Prior to pelvic radiotherapy
23) Unclear findings on other imaging techniques such as X-rays
24) To confirm abnormalities found on other imaging studies.

The procedure of Pelvic CT scan includes the following steps:
1) Written consent is required before the procedure begins.
2) You will be asked to remove all the metallic elements like jewellry, hearing aids, metallic hair clips, metallic underwired bras, wallets, keys, coins, cards containing metallic strips, belts, goggles etc.
3) If CT with contrast dye is being scheduled then you will be given an intravenous injection of a contrast agent or oral solution of contrast agent that yield high clarity images on CT scan.
4) You will be then asked to change your clothes and wear a gown provided by the technician assisting the procedure.
5) You may be provided with head phones or ear plugs to make you feel more comfortable.
6) If you have Claustrophobia or anxiety disorder, then you may be given sedatives or some other alternatives to make you feel comfortable during the scan. CT scanner is equipped with microphone and speakers for two-way communications.
7) Before the scan begins, your assisting Doctor will explain about all the possible adverse effects of using contrast material such as itching, rash, swelling etc. Your KFT report will be required to rule out any kidney disease, pathology and to check your GFR.
8) Then you will be asked to lie on examination table which will slide and place you inside the scanner.
9) You need to lie still during the procedure as body movements may interfere with the quality of images produced. You may be asked to hold your breath for few seconds during the test.
10) Your Radiologist will take several images to evaluate the underlying pathology and at the end these images will be interpreted for making a definite diagnosis.
What happens after a pelvic CT scan?
1) You will be allowed to exit the scanning room once the procedure is over.
2) You may be asked to wait in observation room for some time to evaluate for any possible side effects if contrast dye has been used.
3) Drink water to eliminate contrast material from your body.
4) CT scanning usually takes about 15-30 minutes. However, it may last longer depending upon the severity of your illness and associated co-morbid conditions.
5) If you breastfeed your baby then ask your Radiologist or Physician when to resume breastfeed post injection /ingestion of contrast agent.
6) You will get reports on the next day. However, you may get the image films on the same day if requested by your Clinician.
7) These reports will be then evaluated by your Clinician to make a proper management plan of your condition.
What are the side effects/risks of CT scan pelvis?
CT scan is a safe procedure. The radiation in CT scan is low and contrast dye if used in the procedure, doesn’t stay for longtime in your body. Drinking water helps to flush the contrast agent faster from your body.
However, some concerns about CT are as follows:
1) Allergic reactions to contrast agent, although rare but can happen in some individuals. However, these allergic reactions are usually mild.
2) Contrast induced nephropathy may occur in some individuals specially those with kidney disease.
3) Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should avoid certain medications and test for the safety of baby. Ask your Doctor before undergoing a pelvic CT scan.
4) Exposure to radiation and increased risk of cancer with multiple scans especially those with high risk factors.
