PET CT Scan as Diagnostic Tool for Breast Disorders, PET CT Scan Centres and Cost

In this article, we are going to discuss PET-CT scan as diagnostic tool for the detection of breast disorders or diseases with working principle and procedure of scan. We will also discuss different types of scans available...

Positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scan is the special type of diagnosis tool that uses 3D images for the accurate diagnosis of the disease. PET-CT scan is also called PET-CAT scan, both are same and the only difference is that CT stands for computerized tomography (CT) whereas CAT stands for computerized axial tomography (CAT). Computerized tomography (CT) scan creates the non-moving detailed image of the organs, tissues and bones whereas positron emission tomography (PET) shows how the tissues in the patient at the cellular level work. PET-CT scan is the advanced level of the scan which uses radioactive tracers with short half-life for the diagnosis of the diseases. Most common used radioactive tracer is the glucose called Fludeoxyglucose F18 (FDG) for the diagnosis of the disorders or disease. Other radioactive tracers use in breast PET-CT scan is 68Ga- ethylenediaminetetraacetic and 2-deoxy-2-[18F]-fluoro-D-sorbitol (FDS), which can be synthesized by simple one-step reduction process. This scan uses tracer for both typical and atypical metabolic activity of the cells and absorption of radioactive tracers makes it easy to detect the diseases.

Types of Disorders/Diseases PET-CT Scan Identifies in the Breast

PET-CT scan or PET-CAT scan is the special type of diagnostic tool which is used to create the moving image of the organs or tissues to give the activity at the metabolic level of the tissues. Breast cancer is one of the most known disorder related to breasts. It can be a lump in the breast, armpit, size difference between the breasts, blood from nipples etc. PET-CT scan is one of best modern tool for detection of any type of breast cancer at the earliest and spread of cancer. Most common radioactive tracers used in the breast cancer detection is fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Patient is made to sit for about 1 hour after the intravenous (IV) injection of radioactive tracer (FDG). The tracer will reach whole body and patient can be taken for the scan. PET-CT scan is used to detect the different types of breast disorder; here is the list of some disorders related to breast:

  1. Invasive lobular carcinoma: This is the type of cancer, which begins the lobules (milk producing glands) of breast. It breaks the lobules and have the tendency to spread in lymph nodes.

  2. Inflammatory breast cancer: This type of cancer forms by the growth of cells in breast tissues. The cells travel to lymphatic vessels in skin and block the vessels that cause skin swollen.

  3. Ductal carcinoma in situ: This type of cancer turn the cell lining of milk ducts malignant (cancerous) but stay in place. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) accounts for about 20% of the breast cancers.

  4. Triple-negative breast cancer: In this type of cancer, cells don’t have estrogen or progesterone (ER or PR) receptors. This cancer has the tendency more in woman having below the age of 40.

  5. Metastatic breast cancer: This is the most advanced type of cancer which has spread (metastasized) to different organs or lymph nodes. Cells spread to brain, bones, liver and lungs.

  6. Male breast cancer: Formation of malignant cells in male breasts, this cancer usually happens between the age of 60 to 70. Male breast cancer makes less than 1% of all cancers.

  7. HER2-Positive Breast Cancer: This cancer tests positive for a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Protein of this cancer promotes growth of cancer cells.

  8. Metaplastic carcinoma: General term used for cancers that begin in one cells and change the type of cells into another type.

  9. Angiosarcoma: This is the rare type of cancer which effects lining of blood vessels and lymph vessels.

  10. Phyllodes tumor: Very rare type of breast cancer which mostly behaves benign with local recurrences occurring in small proportion of cases.

Diagnostic Tools Other Than PET-CT Scan for Breast Disorders and Diseases

Why is PET-CT Scan Best for the Breast Disorders or Disease Diagnosis?

PET-CT scan is noninvasive, painless and very fast diagnosis option. PET-CT scan that gives better imaging and shows activity of tissues at cellular level with moving images, this helps the doctor to diagnosis diseases like cancers at earliest of the stages. Early detection makes the treatment easy, effective and less costly as compared to late detection of diseases.
