Pregnancy Ultrasound : When To Get Your First Ultrasound

Pregnancy Ultrasound : When To Get Your First Ultrasound

A pregnancy ultrasound is an imaging test that is commonly used for the assessment of growth and development of your baby inside the uterus.

What Is Pregnancy Ultrasound?

A pregnancy ultrasound is an imaging test that is commonly used for the assessment of growth and development of your baby inside the uterus. A pregnancy ultrasound is also known by various other names such as Obstetric ultrasound, Obstetrical sonography, antenatal scan, antenatal ultrasound, prenatal ultrasound, fetal monitoring ultrasound, pregnancy sonogram etc.

Obstetric sonography utilizes high frequency sound waves and a computer to produce images of the developing fetus along with maternal internal reproductive organs. Ultrasound in pregnancy is a fast, non-invasive and painless imaging modality and is considered safe in pregnancy as it doesn’t utilize ionizing radiations or contrast agents which are usually used in the other imaging scans such as X-rays or CT (Computed tomography) scans.

If Obstetrical color Doppler ultrasound is performed then the real time color-coded details of blood flow such as speed and direction of blood flow in maternal as well as fetal vessels can also be evaluated.

Ultrasound in pregnancy can be performed via two routes and are named accordingly as:

  1. Transabdominal ultrasound
  2. Transvaginal ultrasound.

What Is the Procedure of USG Test for Pregnancy?

The procedure for pregnancy ultrasound may involve the following steps:

  1. Before the scan begins you need to remove ornaments and clothes from the body to expose the Abdomino-pelvic region which is being examined.
  2. You will be then asked to lie on the examination table.
  3. Your Radiologist/Obstetrician will then apply gel/lubricant over the Abdomino-pelvic area for the smooth gliding of probe over it. However, the transducer is kept inside your vagina in case of TVS scan.
  4. Then a transducer/probe will be moved over the skin which sends high frequency sound waves to the body parts. These sound waves are reflected back and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs. These images will be interpreted by your sonographer to assess your condition.
  5. At the end of scan, tissue paper will be provided to clean the gel/lubricant from the body surface.
  6. You will be allowed to leave once the scan is over.

  1. Pregnancy Ultrasound/USG test usually takes about 15-30 minutes. However, it may lasts longer in case of multifetal pregnancy or if there is any associated co-morbid conditions.
  2. You will be allowed to leave soon after the scan.
  3. After the procedure got over, your Sonographer will analyze the result and make a report of your existing conditions.
  4. You will get the reports on the same day.
  5. These reports will be evaluated by your Obstetrician:
    • To check normal fetal growth and development
    • To rule out any pregnancy related complications
    • To identify any abnormality and make a proper management plan for your current pregnancy.
  6. Ultrasonography is a safe procedure with no risks/side effects.
