What is whole abdomen ultrasound?
Ultrasound whole abdomen also known as USG whole abdomen or whole abdomen ultrasonography is a rapid, non-invasive and painless and safe technique that is used for the examination of abdominal contents such as liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, intestine, kidneys as well as abdominal blood vessels.
Ultrasonography is an imaging tool that utilizes sound waves and a computer to produce images of soft tissues, organs and other structures inside your abdomen (often known as abdominal sonograms). It helps in the identification and evaluation of many diseases/disorders or conditions affecting abdominal contents.

- Take an appointment- Fix an appointment in a diagnostic center having the facility of ultrasound whole abdomen scan.
- Clothing - Dress yourself in comfortable outfits so that your body parts which need to be scanned can be easily assessed.
- Fasting - Overnight Fasting of 8-10 hours is usually required in abdominal scans. Take fat-free light meal the night before your test.
- Smoking/Tobacco- Avoid smoking or tobacco chewing before the test as nicotine in these substances may case vasoconstriction which may alter the test results especially when abdominal blood vessels are being evaluated.
- Reports- Carry your relevant medical and lab reports while going for USG scan. These may aid in better evaluation of your condition.
- Hygiene- Maintain hygiene and do not apply oils or creams over the area which need to be evaluated.
What is the procedure of USG scan for abdomen?
The procedure for ultrasound abdomen may involve the following steps:
- Before the scan begins you need to remove ornaments and clothes from your body to expose the abdominal region which is being examined.
- You will be then asked to lie on the examination table.
- Your Radiologist will then apply gel/lubricant over different quadrants of your abdomen for the smooth gliding of probe over it.
- Then a transducer/probe will be moved over different quadrants of your abdomen region which sends which sends high frequency sound waves to the body parts. These sound waves are reflected back and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs. These images will be interpreted by your Radiologist to assess your condition.
- At the end of scan, tissue paper will be provided to clean the gel/lubricant from the skin surface.
What happens after an Ultrasound/USG abdomen scan?
- Ultrasound/USG abdomen test usually takes about 15-30 minutes. However, it may lasts longer depending the severity of condition and the associated co-morbid conditions.
- You will be allowed to leave immediately after the scan.
- After the procedure got over, your Radiologist will analyze the result and make a diagnosis of your condition.
- You will get the reports on the same day.
- These reports will be evaluated by your Health care provider to make a proper management plan for your condition.
- Ultrasonography is usually a safe procedure with no side effects/risks.
