Understand EEG Test: Procedure, Process and Booking

EEG stands for Electroencephalogram test or brain wave test, it is a painless test which measures the electrical activity of your brain. In this blog we will understand baout the process, procedure and booking.

What is an EEG test?

EEG stands for Electroencephalogram test or brain wave test, it is a painless test which measures the electrical activity of your brain. Electric signals are the primary means of communication between the cells in your brain. Even when you are sleeping, they are still at work.

What is EEG (Electroencephalogram) with CD?

An EEG refers to an electroencephalogram test program where the brain activity will be saved into the compact disc(CD). It is a non-invasive test. The results appear as wavy lines on a monitor or paper, which doctors analyze to detect abnormalities.

Why is an EEG test done?

Doctors recommend an EEG test to diagnose brain disorders-

  1. Brain Tumors and strokes: An EEG test is a test which helps to calculate the effect of brain tumors, strokes and other brain disorders and abnormalities.
  2. Head Injuries and Brain Damage: After the head injury, an EEG test can detect brain dysfunction.
  3. Sleep disorders: For people experiencing insomnia, narcolepsy, or sleep apnea an EEG can help understand brain activity during sleep.

Risks of an EEG?

The EEG test is a safe procedure which causes no discomfort. There's no risk of getting an electric shock. In some or rare cases EEG can cause sudden activity in a person with seizure disorder.

Seizure disorder- An abnormal electrical activity in the brain, resulting in a sudden change or behaviour.

Why is EEG with CD?

Doctors recommend this test if you have conditions such as-

  • Inflammation of the brain
  • Seizure disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • Sleep disorders
  • Stroke
  • Brain tumors
  • Brain damage from an injury
  • Brain dysfunction due to various reasons

Along with EEG tests other tests that can detect brain abnormalities-

Here are some other tests that can detect the brain abnormality as EEG test-

How is an EEG test done?

The process is simple, painless yet effective. Here are the steps of procedure-

Before the test- you will ask to wash your hairs carefully so it ensures no oil or effect of electrode contact.

  • Small disc will be attached to the scalp
  • The electrode will record the signal which your brain will send, during this process-
  • Relax and keep eyes closed
  • Breathe deeply for few minutes
  • Look at flashing lights and listen to the sounds
  • This test will take around 30 minutes to an hour.

After the test- You can resume your daily activities. The doctor will analyze the result and discuss the results with you.

EEG test vs Other brain test scans(MRI & CT Scan):

  • EEG tests help to measure brain electrical activity, MRI and CT scan measures brain structure and anatomy.
  • EEG test is used for sleep disorders while other uses for detecting brain tumors.
  • EEG tests take around 30-40 minutes while 60-70 minutes.

Conclusion:

An EEG test is a powerful tool to diagnose brain related conditions. Whether you’re experiencing sleep problems, seizures, or memory issues. This provides better insights into brain activity. It's painless, quick and can help you to know the answers about your neurological health. • Sleep disorder
  • Tumor
  • Head injury
  • Migraine
  • Excess alcohol and drug use

What will happen if you’ve abnormal test?

If you’re having abnormal EEG test, your doctor will recommend you other test like

  • Blood test
  • Electrocardiogram
  • MRI
