What is Urinalysis?
Urinalysis- this term refers to diagnostic tests which involve analysis of urine sample to check various aspects such as physical examination by observing visual characteristics, chemical examination by using test strips, and microscopic examination.
Urinalysis tests check for various components of urine, those components are used as an indication of some malfunctioning in the body resulting in illness.
Urinalysis is also done in routine examination of body, for checking proper functioning of the body.
What is the full-form of Urine RE/ME test, Urine R/M test?
Urine RE/ME test - Urine Routine Examination/ Microscopic Examination
Urine R/M test - Urine Routine/ Microscopic test
What is the purpose of urinalysis?
As mentioned above, urinalysis tests check for components of urine which act as markers of certain diseases, infections and malfunctioning organs.
- Urine RE/ME test is done to check functioning of organs such as kidneys and liver.
- It is also done in case of urinary tract infection (UTI), which is more common in females.
- It also helps in monitoring Diabetic patients.
What are the parameters of Urine R/M test?
Different parameters are assessed in 3 parts of Urine RE/ME test. The 3 parts of the test include:
1. Physical examination
2. Chemical examination
3. Microscopic examination
These parameters help in comprehensive analysis of urine for identifying any underlying condition based on test result, and further diagnostic pathway is also identified if required.
1. Physical examination
Physical examination is based on visual characteristics of urine such as:
- Abnormal color of urine is an indication of – Dehydration or Blood in urine
- Cloudy urine is an indication of possible Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
- Foamy appearance of urine is an indication of problem with functioning of Kidneys.
2. Chemical examination
This analysis is done using urine test strips, and this analysis is also called as Dipstick analysis of urine. The parameters assessed in chemical examination are:
pH of Urine
Normal pH of urine ranges from 4.6-8 depending on variations in diet.
Acidic pH (less than 4.8) of urine is an indication of kidney stones, urinary tract infection, severe diarrhea or some metabolic disorder. Further diagnosis is required to confirm the exact reason for acidic pH of urine.
Basic pH (more than 8) of urine can be due to a recent diet (postprandial alkaline tide) malfunctioning of kidneys due to which kidneys are not able to excrete out acids. It can also be due to a Urinary tract Infection (UTI) caused by Urease producing bacteria, which make the urine basic. Further diagnosis is required to confirm the exact reason for basic pH of urine.
Proteins in Urine
Proteins are absent in urine. A positive result for presence of proteins in urine is an indication of damaged kidneys, since kidneys are responsible for filtering out waste substances in urine and protein should not get filtered into urine.
Glucose in Urine
Glucose presence in urine is taken as an indication of Diabetes.
Bilirubin in Urine
Bilirubin is a yellow colored pigment formed by breakdown of hemoglobin in liver. Normally Bilirubin is excreted in the form of conjugated Bilirubin. Presence of Bilirubin in urine is an indication of liver disease.
Nitrites in Urine
Nitrites in urine are an indication of Urinary Tract Infection of particular types of microorganism, which convert nitrates to nitrites.
3. Microscopic examination
Urine is analyzed under a microscope to check for the presence of components which usually absent in urine. Microscopic examination accounts for:
- Red Blood Cells (RBCs) in urine
- White Blood Cells (WBCs) in urine
- Presence of microorganism such as Bacteria
- Presence of Crystals
