Procedure of Ultrasound Scan?

A medical practitioner trained as a sonographer performs an Ultrasound. USG can be performed in various manners based on the region and issue for which sonography is done. The majority of sonography involves the usual steps as given below-

  • You will be instructed to take off clothing from the region that requires sonography imaging as you recline on the sonography table
  • The sonographer will then apply a special gel on the skin of the body part that is going to be examined
  • The sonographer will be holding wand-like equipment termed as transducer and pass the transducer across your gel covered skin.
  • The transducer releases the sound wave signals into your body which are absorbed by the equipment.
  • The gel ensures no air comes in the way of your skin and the device also sound waves are quite high pitched thus you cannot even hear them and feel them too.
  • The sound waves reflect from the internal organs of your body. The USG machine selects these reflections and converts them to ultrasound images on a computer. You can see the images appearing on the monitor during your sonography procedure underway
  • Once your exam is done, the sonographer cleans the skin on you.

Are there any side effects associated with this procedure?

Ultrasound is not generally associated with any health issue because it is done by trained staff who are properly using it. USG doesn't involve the use of ionising rays as X Ray does, and so it's safer than X Ray. That is why USG is the safest and most common device for seeing an unborn baby during pregnancy, you have to select the best and most trustable diagnostic center for Xrays and USG to remain on safer ground still.

During pregnancy we have to observe the growth of the baby and observe if it's developing any abnormality so that we can decide if any medical or surgical intervention is going to be required once the child is born.
