Candidiasis

Candidiasis, also known as yeast infection, is a fungal infection caused by the Candida species of fungi, most commonly Candida albicans. Candida fungi are naturally present in the body, including the skin, mouth, gastrointestinal tract, and genital tract, and usually do not cause harm.

Symptoms of candidiasis varies depending on the site of infection. Oral candidiasis may present as white patches or plaques on the tongue, inner cheeks, or other parts of the mouth, along with discomfort or pain. Genital candidiasis can cause itching, redness, swelling, a thick white discharge in the vaginal area in females, and discomfort or rash on the penis in males. Cutaneous candidiasis may cause red, itchy, and inflamed patches on the skin, while invasive candidiasis may present with symptoms such as fever, chills, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, and other systemic signs of infection.

Diagnosis of candidiasis usually involves a thorough medical history, clinical evaluation, and sometimes laboratory tests. For oral candidiasis, a physical examination of the mouth may be sufficient for diagnosis, while genital or cutaneous candidiasis may require swabs or cultures to confirm the presence of Candida. In cases of suspected invasive candidiasis, blood cultures, and other diagnostic tests may be needed.
