What is a CECT Neck?

CECT is the short form of contrast-enhanced computed tomography. CECT neck is a radiological procedure, which uses contrast with the motorised X-rays for the detection of abnormalities in the neck. Contrast is used for clear and detailed images for easy and early detection of disorders. CECT can assess abnormalities in the neck bones, joints, and the muscles around them.

What is the need for a CECT Neck?

CECT neck is needed to show the neck-related abnormalities:

  • To look for any neck injuries and fractures.
  • To look for neck tumours or cancers.
  • To look for any tears in the neck.
  •  To assess the bone conditions of the neck.
  •  Look for any bulging disc in the neck.
  •  To look for any deformation in the neck.
  • To plan the radiation or chemotherapy of the neck.
  • To guide the neck surgeries.

What precautions do patients take before going for a CECT neck scan?

In a CECT procedure, patients are advised not to take any food before 4 hours of the scan and also avoid any form of drinking before 2 hours of the scan. The patient will be administered contrast intravenously (IV). Patients need to inform the doctor if she is pregnant, CT is avoided during pregnancy because of complications for an unborn baby.

Also, a patient needs to provide the following information:

Blood test: A blood test will ensure that the contrast will be safe to consume.

Diet: You will be asked to consume only certain food types and drinks before the scan and what to avoid.

Medication: Inform the healthcare provider about the medications the patient is taking, some medicines can have allergic effects with the contrast. Eg. Diabetic medicine metformin (Glucophage) needs to be stopped for some time before the scan.

What is the procedure of a CECT neck scan test?

CECT neck is performed in a CT scanner, which is a doughnut-shaped machine. The patient will be made to lie on the bed attached to the scanner, and the bed slides into the scanner for the scanning. Patients need to limit their movement because any movement can blur the CT scan images. The scanner takes pictures of the abnormal area and the bed moves back out of the scanner. The CECT takes around 75 to 90 minutes.

The CECT neck scan helps create a three-dimensional image of the neck region by using dye. The dye helps produce the scan images in a more detailed manner. The test helps diagnose various problems associated with the neck region including the vertebrae and other soft tissues. The problems might be fractures, infections,  inflammation, arthritis, cervical spine, etc.

CECT neck scans are named as the Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography scan of the neck. This imaging test creates a three-dimensional scan image of the neck region with the use of a special dye and radiations.

By using ionising radiations, contrast medium, and a computer technology, the scan images of the neck region of the body are generated. The images show structures of the neck region including the bones, fat, muscles, and blood vessels. CT scans produce more detailed images than the standard X-rays.

CECT stands for Contrast contrast-enhanced computed tomography. This test is used to create a three-dimensional image of the neck through the use of dye and X-rays. The test is used to diagnose the problems of the vertebrae and other soft tissues in the neck like fractures, inflammation, infections, cervical spine, arthritis, etc.
