What CECT Thorax?

CECT thorax is a radiological examination in which contrast (dye) is used to visualize chest and lung problems.CECT thorax also called contrast-enhanced computed tomography thorax is used to produce cross-sectional images or slices of the organs and structures inside the thorax cavity.

What is the Procedure for CECT Thorax?

CECT thorax is done in the CT scanner which is a doughnut-shaped machine. The patient will be advised to lie on the bed attached to the scanner. The bed slides inside the scanner and cross-sectional pictures will be taken for the diagnostic process. CECT involves the administration of contrast dye, which will be administered to the patient through IV. The contrast makes the scan pictures clear and detailed for easy and early detection of the abnormalities. Patients need to give additional information before going for the contrast CT scan:

Blood test: A blood test will ensure that the contrast will be safe to consume.
Diet: You will be asked to consume only certain food types and drinks before the scan and what to avoid.
Medication: Inform the healthcare provider about the medications the patient is taking, some medicines can have allergic effects with the contrast. Eg. Diabetic medicine metformin (Glucophage) needs to be stopped for some time before the scan.
Pregnancy: Inform the healthcare provider, if the patient is pregnant.

How Does One Prepare for This Test?

4-6 hours of fasting are required. You need to bring the serum creatinine and all medical reports.

Aftercare

After completion of the scan, the IV line is removed from your forearm. You need to drink a lot of water for faster removal of dye.
