Chancroid, also known as soft chancre, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi. It is characterized by the development of painful ulcers or sores on or around the genitals or other areas of the body that have come into contact with an infected person during sexual activity.

The main symptom of chancroid is the presence of one or more ulcers or sores that are typically soft, and tender, and may be accompanied by swelling of the surrounding area. The ulcers may break down and form a painful, open sore with irregular borders. Other symptoms may include painful or swollen lymph nodes in the groin, discomfort or pain during urination, and discharge from the genitals.
