What is a Chest X-Ray Test?

A chest X-ray is an imaging test that utilizes X-rays to examine the chest's architecture and organs.

Typically, a chest x-ray is the initial imaging test used to diagnose symptoms such as:

  • Respiratory troubles
  • A chronic or severe cough
  • Chest pain or injury
  • Fever

Why is Chest X-Ray Done?

It can help your doctor determine how well your lungs and heart function. Certain heart conditions might produce alterations in the lungs. Certain conditions can alter the anatomy of the heart and lungs. It also helps detect any abnormalities in the chest.

Guidelines To Follow Before, During and After the Test

Here are some guidelines an individual can refer to once they have decided to undergo a Chest-X Ray Scan.

The required documents needed for this test includes your valid government ID and an appropriate Doctor’s prescription.

Before the Test

Very little preparation is generally required before the Chest X- ray Scan

Some of the steps are listed below:

  1. At the hospital, just before the test is done, the patient is asked to change into the gown. Also, remove any jewellery that could hinder X-ray images.

During the Test

  1. Your body will be positioned in between a machine producing X-rays and a plate. This plate creates the image digitally or using the X-ray film.
  2. In some cases, you may be asked to move to different positions to get both front and side view for the X-ray.
  3. Front view: Stand against the plate and hold your arms up or towards the sides. The shoulders should roll forward. The X-ray technician asks you to take a deep breath and hold it for the next few seconds.
  4. Side view: Turn while placing one of the shoulders on the plate. Also, as before, hold your arms up and raise the hands over the head. The X-ray technician asks you to take a deep breath and hold it for the next few seconds.

After the test

  1. After the scanning is complete, the respective radiologist would examine the images to understand whether any more of them are required ahead. Once the radiologist is satisfied, the patient could go back home.
  2. Also, patients are required to take appointment with their respective doctor to discuss the results for future treatment planning.

Result Interpretation

Black-and-white images will be formed by the x-ray.

The structures are studied by the radiologist as per the density of the image and underlying pathologies like: pneumonia, Tuberculosis (tb), heart failure, cancer, fluid around the heart.

Risks Involved With the Test

The amount of radiation you are exposed to with a chest X-ray is usually low — it is said to be even lower than natural sources of the radiation in the normal environment.

Despite the risks/benefit ratio, you might be given the protective apron if multiple images are needed.

Note:

  1. Inform the radiologist and doctor if you are pregnant or could be pregnant.
  2. This procedure could also be performed in such a way that your abdomen is protected from the radiation.
