Dientamobiasis

Dientamoebiasis, also known as Dientamoeba fragilis infection, is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan parasite Dientamoeba fragilis. D. fragilis is a single-celled organism that can infect the large intestine of humans and other primates, causing gastrointestinal symptoms.

Dientamoebiasis can cause a range of gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, nausea, and sometimes fever. However, some individuals infected with D. fragilis may be asymptomatic and show no signs of infection. The symptoms of dientamoebiasis can be similar to those of other gastrointestinal infections, making diagnosis challenging without specific testing.

Diagnosis of dientamoebiasis typically involves examining stool samples for the presence of D. fragilis cysts or trophozoites (the active form of the parasite). Specialized laboratory techniques, such as microscopy or molecular testing, may be required for accurate identification of D. fragilis.
