This test determines the levels of deoxypyridinoline (DPD), which indicates your rate of bone resorption.

The deoxypyridinoline (DPD) urine test is used to measure bone re-absorption rates in healthy individuals and in those with enhanced risk of developing metabolic bone diseases

Healthy bones are an essential requirement for women who have undergone menopause or have estrogen deficiency.

What is DPYD?

During collagen maturation in bone, DPYD is formed and is released during bone resorption. 40% is free in urinary excretions, and 60% is bound to small peptides. DPYD Free is a  specific indicator of bone resorption.

Deoxypyridinoline can be used to monitor therapies (which may include bisphosphonate drugs) in people diagnosed with osteoporosis

What is DPYD deficiency?

Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency is a disorder characterized by a range of severity. Some patients can exhibit neurological problems, and some may show no signs or symptoms in others.

  • Neurological problems such as recurrent seizures, intellectual disability, a small head size, increased muscle tone, delayed development of motor skills such as walking, and autistic behaviors that affect communication and social interaction are seen in the affected patients.
  • Individuals with asymptomatic dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency are identified only by laboratory testing, as they have no signs.
  • Patients with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency are susceptible to severe,  life-threatening toxic reactions to certain drugs called fluoropyrimidines used to treat cancer.
  • Mutations in the DPYD gene cause dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase deficiency
  • Redness, swelling, numbness, and peeling of the skin on the palms and soles (hand-foot syndrome); shortness of breath or temporary hair loss may also occur.

When are DPYD levels high?

High levels of DPD are found in postmenopausal women due to estrogen deficiency and in individuals with diseases.
