What is Galactosemia Panel 2 Test?

Galactosemia is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a lack of any of the three enzymes needed for galactose metabolism. Galactosemia caused by a lack of Galactose- 1-phosphatel transferase (GALT) is the most common cause and is known as Classical Galactosemia. Duarte variant galactosemia has higher levels of enzyme activity (5-20%) than classical galactosemia (5%).

Elevated plasma galactose levels in Galactosemia patients may indicate ineffective dietary restriction or compliance. Increased galactose concentrations may also indicate severe hepatitis, new born biliary atresia, and galactose intolerance.
