This test is used to detect the disease which is known as Hemophilia.

What is a Blood Clot?

A blood clot is a mass that is formed within the blood vessel that helps in halting the bleeding from a wound by preventing the flow of blood from the boat. Blood clot formation is a multi-step process that includes the following phases.

  • Vascular Phase - It initiates with injury to a blood vessel which causes its shrinkage.
  • Circulating Phase - In this, the Platelets of the blood cluster at the site when an injury has occurred.
  • Coagulation phase - The coagulation phase now forms the clot.
  • An enzyme known as throng converts clotting factor fibrinogen to fibrin.

What do you mean by hemophilia?

Hemophilia is a condition that disturbs or halts blood clot formation in the human body.

What is it in this test?

The hemophilia panel includes the following tests

  • Prothrombin Time(PT)
  • Partial thromboplastin time(PTT)

Clotting factors

When any injury takes place, it causes bleeding, and many proteins work together to clot the site.

Bleeding Disorders

The diseases or conditions which affect the clotting cycle of the blood are known as bleeding disorders.

Bleeding problems can also be associated with the abnormality of clotting factors.

What do you mean by prothrombin time test?

This test helps detect the type of bleeding disorder the patient has encountered.

This test is recommended alone, along with some other tests, when a person is encountering excessive bleeding or clotting and ventures into continuous miscarriages.

Procedure for this test:

  1. The skin should be cleaned.
  2. Tie a band on your upper arm above the elbow.
  3. Insert a needle in the arm and withdraw the blood.
  4. Now, cover the site with bandages or halt any bleeding.
  5. Send the sample to the lab

What is a PTT Test?

A PTT test helps to check a group of clotting factors.

  • Aids in checking any excess bleeding problems.

The procedure of this test:

  • The skin, where the needle goes in, should be initially cleaned.
  • Wrap a band around the upper arm of the patient
  • Insert the needle into a vein
  • Withdraw the blood

Interpretation of result

An average value for a PTT is 60 to 70 seconds. If the Clot formation is too quickly, it is abnormal.

FAQ

The Hemophilia is known to be X-linked heritable coagulopathy which has an overall prevalence of about  1 in a 10,000 individuals. It is seen that two of the most common forms could be factor VIII deficiency or suffering from hemophilia A, which then it comprises of approximately 80% of the cases and when there is a factor IX deficiency or for hemophilia B, which also comprises of approximately 20% of the cases.

  • The primary lab tests for your hemophilia are the clotting ability examinations that are present. These assess your clotting abilities of the factors VIII and IX. Which you have about 40% or even in a less activity of hemophilia tests which indicates if someone could have hemophilia A or B.
  • This comes with the exception of the females who have any  genetic mutations to the factor of VIII or your factor IX proteins.

The Sensitivity of the hemophilia test is >99% for the patients suffering from severe haemophilia B (FIX:C <1%) and in about 98% for the patients suffering from mild or even  moderate haemophilia (FIX:C 1–40%)

The different Coagulation tests along with coagulation assays are considered to be the gold standard for diagnosis of your disease hemophilia. With the Prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), or the normal the prothrombin time (PT), we have a prolonged bleeding time (BT), and even normal fibrinogen concentration are the diagnostic tests of hemophilia.

The Genetic testing is said to analyze your factor VIII or the factor IX gene in order to further identify any genetic variant (i.e., change) in your gene which further  prevents the gene from further producing the clotting factor properly and therefore it could also cause hemophilia.

In case of hemophilia, the PTT level gets prolonged, but your PT and the platelet count are considered to be normal. The Factor VIII and the IX assays also tend to determine what  type and the severity there could be for hemophilia.
