Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, which belongs to the poxvirus family. The virus is spread through direct contact with an infected person, or through contact with contaminated objects, such as towels or clothing.

The primary symptom of molluscum contagiosum is the appearance of small, raised, wart-like growths on the skin, typically in areas that are warm and moist, such as the armpits, groin, or genital area. The growths may be flesh-colored, white, or pink, and may have a central depression or white core.

Molluscum contagiosum is typically a self-limited infection and resolves on its own over time, usually within 6 to 12 months. However, in some cases, the growths may persist for longer periods or become inflamed, infected, or spread to other areas of the body.

The diagnosis of molluscum contagiosum is made through clinical evaluation and laboratory tests, such as a biopsy or PCR test to detect the virus in skin samples.
