Uses of MRI are:

The MRI scanner is a safe procedure as iit doesn't use ionising radiation to produce scan images but strong magnets. Although it may cause

• Hearing damage if inadequate ear protection is used.
• Peripheral muscle or nerve stimulation causing a twitching sensation.
• Heating of the body due to radiofrequency energy usage.
• Movement of metal objects/pieces if presenting certain velocity causing damage.

MRI and CT provide more details about the gastric and extragastric extent of gastric diseases than gastroscopy and gastroscopic ultrasound. These detailed images prove to be helpful for diagnosis and treatment planning.

You should not get an MRI done if you have metallic implants or devices. MRI is unsafe if any foreign body is present, especially near eyes or major vessels. These metal devices can be:

• Cardiac pacemaker
• Defibrillators
• Nerve stimulator
• Prosthetic leg 
• Cochlear implant
• Stents
• Coils etc.

Chest MRI, when used for the heart, can show the heart including its chambers, muscles, valves etc and can tell about the efficiency of the heart such as showing blood flow. The MRI scan images are two or three dimensional that can help in diagnosis.
