What is a fetal MRI?

A fetal MRI is known to be a noninvasive imaging test which offers a more detailed and clear information about the anatomic structures of the fetus, thus, providing high-resolution images.

MRI, which is a short form of magnetic resonance imaging, uses a magnetic field, rather than radiation, to obtain specific pictures for evaluation.

In an ultrafast fetal MRI, the images can also be quickly captured using a “snapshot” technique.

Note: This painless scan does not expose your baby to any radiation. And there are no known risks to the baby.

Why the fetal MRI is scan done?

The Fetal MRI supplements the information that is obtained from the high-resolution fetal ultrasound and it also provides additional information regarding the baby’s diagnosis.

It is usually performed in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of the pregnancy. This type of examination is used to evaluate abnormalities in the baby's brain, spine, and body.

The MRI may also be used to confirm an ultrasound diagnosis or add significant diagnostic information in complex cases.

How to prepare for the fetal MRI?

  • No medical devices should be present with the patient inside the MRI as it interferes with the scan.
  • No Metal devices or Jewellery should be worn.
  • You may have to change into the hospital gown.
  • Do not consume caffeine or sugary foods for at least four hours before the examination (as these food items can cause more activity in the fetus and it would make it difficult to get images with motion
  • Also make sure to empty your bladder before the MRI scan for comfort reasons.

During the procedure:

  • It is preferred that you lie on your back during MRI procedure. However, if you cannot, a bolster may be placed under your knees that would help in taking the pressure off of your lower back. Also, you could also lie partially on your side as an alternative option.
  • The entire procedure would take a total of 30 to 45 minutes

After Care

  • After the scanning is complete, the respective radiologist would examine the images to understand whether any more of them are required ahead. Once the radiologist is satisfied, the patient could go back home.
  • Also, patients are required to take appointment with their respective doctor to discuss the results for future treatment planning.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ

In addition to the indication of brain and spinal abnormalities, the other common reasons for fetal MRI include the following:

  • Face and neck abnormalities
  • Thoracic and abdominal abnormalities

On an average, the fetal MRI was employed to assess 15% of cases of major fetal structural abnormalities, which in actual represented < 0.3% of the total pregnancies.

You might be requested to either eat nothing at all, or to not even have foods or consume drinks with sugar or caffeine for at least 4-6 hours before the test. This is done so as to keep the baby calm so that the MRI machine can also capture clear images.

You will also be asked to empty the bladder before the test.

The general limitations of the fetal MRI include the following:

  • High cost
  • Limited availability

MRI-specific absolute contraindications include the following:

  • Maternal pacemakers
  • Ferromagnetic implants
  • Claustrophobia

It is seen that one of the greatest challenges in the fetal MRI is motion or the movement that originates from both the spontaneous fetal motion and also from maternal movement.

As we are aware that maternal movement exists in so many forms, including both whole body and the internal movements, for instance:

  • Cardiac pulsatility
  • Digestion
  • Respiration

The Fetal MRI should be done in the second or the third trimester of pregnancy. As there are some teratogenic effects of an MRI in the early pregnancy stage, it is not confirmed and also the multilayer structure of the baby’s cerebral parenchyma (functional tissue present in the brain) develops late.

This tissue is appreciable after 16 weeks of the gestation on at least a 1.5 T MRI, we, at Ganesh Diagnostic and Imaging Centre have 3T MRI machine that could enhance the imaging processing.

The MRI will be best performed after there has been completion of organogenesis (development of organs in 16 weeks).

The duration of the fetal MRI is between 45 minutes to 60 minutes

You would be lying in a tube-shaped MRI machine. In general, a fetal MRI scan creates a thumping sound, so one could either listen to music or use earplugs until the scanning is complete.

In one of the research studies, upon analyses of the data in 30 pregnant females with fetal non-CNS congenital anomalies, the diagnostic accuracy of the prenatal ultrasound alone in the detection of the congenital anomalies was 76%, with a sensitivity of around 76%.

And it was seen that the diagnostic accuracy of MRI alone was estimated to be 96.6%, with a sensitivity of around 96.6%.

Some of the MRI facilities would give mild intravenous (injected directly into the vein) sedation to the respective mother.

This is considered to be completely harmless to the fetus and it is known to be a mild version of Valium, which also helps to relax the respective mother and also reduce the rapid fetal movement, which can further enhance the image quality.

Yes. The fetal MRI is considered to be safe for the mother and also safe for the baby. Once you arrive at the Diagnostic Center, you would be asked to change into a gown to make you comfortable during the scan.

Before starting the scanning procedure, we could even sit down and answer any questions you might have regarding the MRI procedure itself.

You can get an appointment with your doctor and seek guidance on the next steps.
