Paget's Disease

Paget's disease of bone, also known as osteitis deformans, is a chronic bone disorder that causes abnormal bone growth and remodeling. The disease is characterized by the breakdown of old bone and the formation of new bone in an abnormal manner, leading to enlarged, weakened, and deformed bones. Paget's disease can affect any bone in the body, but it most commonly affects the spine, pelvis, skull, and legs.

The exact cause of Paget's disease is unknown, but it is believed to be linked to genetic factors and possibly viral infections. Symptoms of the disease may include bone pain, deformities, fractures, and arthritis.

Diagnosis of Paget's disease is typically made through a combination of physical examination, imaging tests (such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans), and blood tests to measure levels of certain enzymes that indicate bone turnover. A bone biopsy may also be done to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment for Paget's disease may include medications to regulate bone turnover, such as bisphosphonates or calcitonin, as well as pain relievers and physical therapy. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct bone deformities or fractures. Regular monitoring is also important to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
