Paragonimiasis

Paragonimiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the lung fluke Paragonimus spp. The infection is acquired by ingesting raw or undercooked freshwater crustaceans, such as crabs and crayfish, that are infected with the parasite. Paragonimiasis is most commonly found in Asia, but cases have also been reported in parts of Africa, South America, and the Caribbean.

The symptoms of paragonimiasis can vary widely and may include cough, chest pain, fever, and difficulty breathing. In some cases, the infection can cause chronic lung disease or damage to other organs, such as the brain or liver. Diagnosis of paragonimiasis can be made through a combination of clinical examination, laboratory testing, and imaging studies.
