What is Pelvis doppler ultrasound?

The pelvis or the pelvic region is the lowermost part of your trunk, situated between your abdomen and the thighs.

Pelvic doppler ultrasound also known as USG doppler scan of pelvis is a diagnostic technique that is used for the examination and evaluation of reproductive organs such as uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina in case of females and prostate in case of males or pelvic organs including bladder and rectum.

Types of pelvic doppler ultrasound includes:

  • Abdomino-pelvic doppler scan
  • Transvaginal (TVS) doppler scan
  • Transrectal doppler scan

Doppler scans are superior to conventional ultrasound as doppler ultrasound provide real time parameters of blood flow such as velocity of blood flow, direction, flow pattern etc.

It is a rapid, painless, non-invasive and safe technique that doesn’t utilize ionizing radiations or intravenous/oral contrast agents which are usually used in the other imaging tests such as in X-rays or CT (Computed tomography) scans.

What is the procedure for pelvis color doppler ultrasound?

The procedure for Pelvic Doppler ultrasound may involve the following steps:

  1. Before the scan begins you need to remove ornaments and clothes from the body to expose the body part which is being evaluated.
  2. A technician may measure your blood pressure.
  3. You will be then asked to lie on the examination table.
  4. Your Radiologist will then apply gel/lubricant over the pelvic region for better transmission of sound waves and smooth gliding of probe over it. However, the transducer may be kept inside your body in case of TVS doppler.
  5. Then a hand-held transducer/probe will be moved over the pelvic surface which sends high frequency sound waves to the body parts. These sound waves are reflected back by the moving blood cells such RBCs and are captured by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs of different colors revealing parameters such as direction, speed of blood flow and flow pattern in real time.
  6. These images will be interpreted to evaluate your condition
  7. At the end of procedure, tissue paper will be provided to clean the gel/lubricant from the body surface. You will be allowed to leave once the imaging is over.

What happens after a pelvic doppler scan?

  • Pelvis Doppler test usually takes about 30-45 minutes. However, it may last longer depending the severity of condition and the associated co-morbid conditions.
  • You will be allowed to leave immediately after the test.
  • After the scanning is over, your Radiologist will evaluate the result and make a diagnosis of your condition.
  • You will get the report on the same day.
  • This report will be analyzed by your doctor to make a proper management plan for your condition.
  • Pelvic Color doppler is a safe and painless procedure with no risk or side effects.
