Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR), VDRL Titer Test Cost & Procedure

This test is used for the diagnosis of syphilis. It operates by spotting your body's non-specific antibodies while battling the virus.

The spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum is the source of the STI known as syphilis. If untreated, it might be lethal.

This lowers the likelihood of problems and the disease being spread by an unknowing afflicted person.

When should you get an RPR test?

For many reasons, your doctor might recommend an RPR test. It's a fast screening method for people at high risk for syphilis. If you have syphilis-like sores or a rash, your doctor might prescribe this test. Doctors frequently use RPR tests to check for syphilis in pregnant women.

States used to mandate that anybody requesting a marriage license undergo a syphilis screening test. Only Montana still demands any blood test, and a syphilis test is no longer part of that requirement.

Procedure

• A venipuncture is a quick technique doctors use to collect blood for the RPR test.
• This can be carried out in a lab or your doctor's office. Before this test, you don't need to fast or follow any other particular instructions.
• You will be asked to lie down on a cot, gurney, or comfy chair by a medical professional.
• Your upper arm is then wrapped in rubber tubing, which will help highlight your veins.

Result

An RPR blood sample taken usually reveals no antibodies, which are often created after an infection. If no antibodies are present, your doctor cannot entirely rule out syphilis.

• Your immune system needs some time to produce antibodies after you become sick. A test may not yet detect any antibodies soon after infection.
• An example of a false negative is this. The RPR test result is almost invariably positive in individuals in the secondary (middle) disease set.
• The RPR test can potentially give false-positive findings, indicating that you have syphilis when you don't. The existence of another illness that isn't present can cause a false positive.
