What is Renal Doppler ultrasound?

Humans have one pair of kidneys, located one on each side in the retroperitoneal space. Kidneys are the major excretory organ responsible for the removal of waste substances and toxins out from the body through urine. Kidneys together with paired ureters, urinary bladder and the urethra form the urinary system of the human body.

Renal doppler ultrasound also known as renal color doppler scan or renal doppler scan is a diagnostic tool that is used for the assessment and evaluation of your kidneys. It uses sound waves and a computer to delineate the anatomical details of the kidneys, renovascular system, normal variants and pathological conditions affecting the kidneys and renal blood vessels.

It is a non-invasive, painless, rapid and safe procedure useful in the evaluation of real time parameters of blood including blood flow, velocity of blood, blood flow pattern and patency of blood vessels and is thus considered as a superior technique as compared to the conventional ultrasound imaging.

What are the uses of renal doppler test?

Renal Color doppler is now considered one of the most popular non-invasive tools for the detection and evaluation of many clinical and sub-clinical conditions involving the kidneys, renal arteries or veins. It is usually indicated in the following conditions:

  1. To evaluate the blood flow through renal vessels
  2. Renal artery stenosis
  3. Renal hypertension
  4. Malignant hypertension
  5. Acute renal failure
  6. Renal trauma
  7. Renal vein thrombosis
  8. Compression of renal vessels
  9. Vascular malformations
  10. Chronic renal diseases such as CKD, diabetic nephropathy, Lupus nephritis, amyloidosis etc.
  11. Renal tumours
  12. Polycystic kidney disease
  13. Arterio-venous fistula
  14. Flank bruit
  15. Aneurysm
  16. Pseudoaneurysm
  17. Renal mass
  18. Assessment of renal blood flow in known cases of trauma, aortic dissection etc.
  19. Atherosclerosis or plaque deposition in renal vessels
  20. Assessment of renal parameters such as size, shape etc.
  21. Monitoring of patients with renovascular disease
  22. Pre -operative evaluation of renal blood supply before surgical approach.
  23. For guiding procedures such as renal biopsy, renal artery stent placement.
  24. Post-operative evaluation such as after endovascular intervention, renal blood vessels repair post-trauma etc.
  25. Evaluation of patients with transplanted kidneys.

  6. Hygiene: Maintain hygiene and do not apply oils or creams over the flank region which need to be evaluated.

What is the procedure for the Renal Color Doppler test?

The procedure for Renal Color Doppler scan may involve the following steps:

  1. Before the scan begins you need to remove ornaments and clothes from your body to expose the flank region.
  2. Your assisting technician may measure your blood pressure.
  3. You will be then asked to lie on the examination table.
  4. Your Radiologist will then apply a special gel/lubricant over the flank area for effective transmission of sound waves and smooth gliding of probe over it.
  5. Then a hand-held transducer/probe will be moved over the flank region which sends high frequency sound waves to the body parts. These sound waves are reflected by the moving blood cells such RBCs and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs of different colors depicting the blood flow pattern, direction and speed of blood flow in real time. These images will be interpreted to assess your condition.
  6. At the end of scan, tissue paper will be provided to clean the gel/lubricant from the flank surface.
