BREAST ULTRASOUND PROCEDURE

An imaging procedure called a breast ultrasound uses sound waves to look within your breasts. Your healthcare professional may use it to identify breast issues. Additionally, it enables your doctor to assess how well the blood is getting to certain parts of your breasts.

Why is a Breast Ultrasound Done?

Doctors request for breast ultrasound, in the event that a physical examination or mammography indicates a breast anomaly, such as you have a breast lump, a painful or sore spot on your breast and an odd discharge from your nipple, or a change in the texture or appearance of your breast skin.

Precautions

  • Before the test, you don't need to stop eating or drinking. Additionally, you won't require any medication to relax.
  • On the day of the test, you shouldn't apply any lotion, powder, or other products to your breasts.
  • Wear things that are simple to remove. Alternately, dress in a way that the radiologist or tech can reach your chest.

Procedure

  • You'll lay on your back on a table during the inspection. On the side of your breast that will be examined, you will be asked to extend your arm over your head. Additionally, you can lie on your side.
  • A clear, heated gel will be applied to the skin over the breast area by the technologist.
  • The technologist will move the transducer over the area being examined while pressing it firmly against the skin.
  • The technologist will wipe off the gel after the test is finished.

After Care

After a breast ultrasound, you don't require any additional care. Depending on your circumstances, your healthcare practitioner may give you various instructions.
