PNS (Paranasal Sinus) Waters View Procedure

Water’s view (also known as the occipito-mental view) helps to get a better view of the maxillary sinuses by using an X-ray beam angled at 45° to the orbito-meatal line.It is a method of imaging that shows the paranasal sinuses.. (PNS) along with surrounding soft tissues.

Why is PNS (Paranasal Sinus) Water’s View Recommended?

This view is useful in assessing:

  • Acute sinusitis
  • Facial fracture
  • Maxillary sinus
  • Infra Orbital fracture
  • Lateral wall of the maxilla
  • Zygomatic arch
  • Nasal septum
  • Ethmoid and frontal sinus

Patient preparation

  • To avoid a bright or blank spot on the diagnostic film, remove any metal objects, including jewellery, hair clips, watches, rings, and other items of a similar nature, from the area of the body being scanned.
  • Take out any objects from the hair, including ear clips, hair grips, and dentures.
  • Notify your X-Ray technician in the case of a pregnancy.

Procedure for PNS (Paranasal Sinus) Water’s View

Part positioning

  • The mid-sagittal plane is the right angle to the IR/ cassette.
  • Midline, with no lateral head tilt or rotation. The head is extended such that the Cantho-meatal line is elevated 37 degrees relative to the CR.
