Treadmill Test (TMT) Procedure

The effects of exercise on the heart are evaluated using a treadmill exercise stress test. Doctors can assess the presence or absence of coronary artery disease and identify irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) through exercise.

Why is Treadmill Test (TMT) Done?

  • Diagnose heart arrhythmia
  • Confirm coronary artery disease*
  • Check the heart's condition before undergoing major surgery.
  • If the patient has a heart arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat.

Precautions

  • Do not take meal two hours before the test, you can drink water.
  • Start brisk walking a few days before the test
  • Avoid tea, coffee, or alcoholic beverages before the test
  • Asthma patients should take their inhalers before the test

Procedure for Treadmill Test (TMT)

  • You will be given an explanation of the test by a technician, who will also ask you a few questions and take a brief medical history. Before, during, and following the test, your electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure, and heart rate will be recorded.
  • You will be required to take off all upper-body apparel and change into a gown with a front opening.
  • To record an ECG, adhesive electrodes will be applied to your chest. If necessary, the electrode placement locations will be shaved and disinfected with alcohol. To guarantee a high-quality ECG recording, a light scratching may also be applied.
  • We'll take note of your resting heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG.
  • You'll be required to use a treadmill to walk. The speed and intensity of the walk gradually pick up after a slow start. Because the exam is effort-dependent, it is crucial that you walk as far as you can.
  • Throughout the examination, you will be watched. The technologist will immediately halt the test if an issue arises. If you feel any symptoms, such as chest pain, wooziness, unexpected shortness of breath, or acute exhaustion, it is crucial that you let the technologist know.
  • You will be instructed to lie down after the examination. Following exercise, you will have your blood pressure, heart rate, and ECG checked for three to five minutes.

Risks/Side Effects

A safe test is TMT. However, the patient may collapse or faint while using a treadmill, the heartbeat is erratic, and chest pain for some time following the test.
