X-RAY LEG AP VIEW (RIGHT / LEFT) PROCEDURE

The leg AP view is a part of the entire tibia and fibula including knee joint and ankle joints.

INDICATION

This view is useful in assessing:

  • To identify any fractures in the leg bones and monitor the healing of the fractured bone once it has been set
  • To identify an infection
  • Osteoporosis
  • Malformations
  • Irregular bone growth
  • To diagnose any suspected cases of arthritis
  • Dislocation of the leg joints.

PATIENT PREPARATION

  • Remove metal objects like jewellery, hairpins, dentures, hearing aids, etc from the body part being scanned for the procedure. Otherwise, there be a blank spot on the x-ray film.
  • Inform the x-ray technician, if you are expecting or think you may be expecting. So that precautions can be taken to protect the baby from harmful radiation.

PART POSITIONING

The foot will be in dorsiflexion and the toes will be pointing straight up toward the ceiling whether the patient is supine or sitting up straight on the table.
