X-RAY SUBMENTO VERTEX VIEW PROCEDURE

The skull sub-mento-vertex view is an angled infero-superior radiograph of the base of the skull. It isalso known as the Base of the skull view.

Why is X-RAY Sub-mento Vertex View Done?

This view is useful in assessing:

  • Foramen magnum
  • Foramen sinosum
  • Sephinoid sinus
  • Cervical spine subluxation
  • Acute trauma
  • Mandible
  • Cervical spine fracture

Precautions

  • The patient must be instructed to remove all kinds of metallic objects from the body be it Jewellery, Hair Clips, ear clips, dentures, Watches, Rings, etc. to avoid the chance of a blank spot on the diagnostic film.
  • Female patients must notify an X-ray technician before the examination procedure, in the case of a pregnancy.

PATIENT POSITIONING FOR PROCEDURE

  1. Depending on how the patient presents
  • Erect: the patient leans back on a chair with back support and faces away from the upright Bucky.
  • Supine: The shoulders are elevated using a firm pillow and allowing the head to tilt backward.
  1. The neck of the patient is hyperextended until the IOML(infra-orbito-meatal line) is parallelwith the receptor and the skull vertex is in contact with the center of the receptor.
  2. Ensure that the (MSP) mid-sagittal plane is perpendicular to the receptor.

CENTRAL RAY

  • The Centre ray is perpendicular to the radiographic line.
  • Centre ray is directly passing throw the 4 cm Inferior to the mandibular symphysis
