What is TCL and DLC test?

The TLC and DLC test is known to be a regular complete blood test that would measures the various components of the blood.

It allows you to get information on a person's general health. The Hb component or the hemoglobin measures number of your red blood cells and the TLC measures the total number of the white blood cells.

The high white blood cell count (WBC) indicates an infection. The DLC measure is known to measure the consistency and structure of the WBC Components as follows:

  • Leukocytes
  • Basophils
  • Eosinophils
  • Neutrophils
  • Monocytes
  • Lymphocytes

Why is the TLC & DLC test required?

The elevated levels of either one or more of white blood cell (WBC) types might indicate an infection or chronic disease that requires some treatment.

The Elevated or the Depressed DLC could also indicate the following:

  • Weak Immune System Health
  • Autoimmune Diseases
  • Possibility Of Cancer

Normal Levels in a Healthy Individual

The normal range for total white blood cell count (TLC) is 4000 to 11,000 cells/cubic millimeter of blood.

Low Levels

A decrease in total number of the white blood cells, or the leukopenia occurs when your body's ability to fight an infection and disease is seen to be reduced, and this makes the body more susceptible to any health complications.

It occurs during the following conditions:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Influenza
  • Tuberculosis
  • Malaria
  • Typhoid Fever
  • Dengue Fever

High Levels

An elevated total white blood cell count or TLC level is called- leukocytosis. Chronically, the infected people – for example the people suffering from the following:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Connective Tissue Diseases
  • Blood Disorders
  • Leukemia
  • In newborns

The TLC and DLC test in general does not even diagnose certain types of conditions.

How to prepare for the test?

A lab technician would take a small needle to extract a sample of blood from the arm or hand.

No special preparation is required before the test.

Procedure

Method: When blood is drawn, it is called “venipuncture”

  • At the test center, you would be requested to sit comfortably on the chair or even lie down on the cot.
  • In case of long sleeve clothing, roll up sleeve of one end or remove the arm from the sleeve of the clothing.
  • A healthcare provider, or a technician/nurse, would tie band made of rubber tightly on your upper arm.
  • Once an appropriate vein is found, a needle is inserted below the skin to take the sample of minimum 2ml.

A short sharp prick may be felt when needle puncture is made under the skin, to collect the blood sample.

C. After the test

  1. After the blood is withdrawn, the respective technician/ healthcare professional would withdraw the needle.
  2. Place pressure on puncture wound to stop the bleeding for. A small bandage may also be put on the wound.
  3. You would be able to return on your usual routine immediately.

FAQ

The Total leukocyte count or the (TLC) measures the white blood cell count and the number of leucocytes in the body.

While, the differential leukocyte count or the (DLC) would measure the percentage of each type of the WBC that is present in the bloodstream.

It is said that under the TLC guidelines, one should do as follows:

Keep the intake of the saturated fat below the value of 7 percent of the total calories for each day and also the overall fat intake between the value of 25 and 35 percent of calories you would consume.

The total daily level of cholesterol intake is said to be less than 200 milligrams.

The specific number for high (above normal) white blood cell count (WBC) which is said to vary from one diagnostic center to another, but the general rule of thumb would be that the count of more than say- 10,500 leukocytes in one microliter of blood in the adults and it is generally considered to be high, while the 4,500-10,500 would be considered within your normal range.

Some studies suggest that reveals that the raised white blood cell (WBC) and the Neutrophils counts along with fall in lymphocyte count that can be seen in some of the patients with COVID-19 Infection.

The other studies have also shown that determining your Neutrophils-to-lymphocyte ratio could serve as a biomarker that could predict the infection’s outcome.

The DLC test is considered to measure the percentage of every type of the WBC which is present in the bloodstream.

The differential count would be able to detect immature WBCs and also the abnormalities for example:

  • Anemia
  • Leukemia
  • Various Infections

White blood cells or Leukocytes are an essential part of the immune system that helps fight against infections.

The low white blood cell count in the adults is seen to be less than a value of 4,000 cells per micro liter of blood.

A low white blood cell count can be an indicator of certain conditions, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, vitamin deficiencies, or a side effect of cancer treatment.

The Increased counts of one or even more of the WBC types might indicate an infection or a chronic condition that would need to be addressed. Increased or the decreased DLC can also indicate possibility of various  health conditions of your immune system, autoimmune disorders, and the  cancers where the body attacks its own cells of the immune system.

The normal range of the TLC is between the values of 4000 to 11,000/micro liters in an adult individual or in the healthy child as well.

The normal values for the TLC for the both genders and then across all age groups is around 4.5-11.0 x 109 /L.

The Neutrophils level is 56% , The Eosinophils is 2.7% , The Lymphocytes is 34% The Monocytes is 4%.
