VEP (Visual Evoked Potential) test is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity in the visual cortex of the brain in response to visual stimuli. The test helps to evaluate the function of the visual system, including the eyes and optic nerves. It is also known as Visual Evoked Response (VER) Test.

Why is a visual evoked potential (VEP) test done?

This test is recommended by doctor when you start experiencing changes in your eyesight, in order to find out the root cause of the changes.  Because the change in the eyesight can be due to abnormalities or problems along the routes of specific nerves.

Apart from the mentioned above, if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Painful or painless Loss of eyesight
  • Duplicate or Blurred vision
  • Vision impairment
  • Flashing lights
  • Changes in colour vision
  • Weakness in eyes, legs or arms

What is the procedure for the visual evoked potential (VEP) test?

Preparation : The individual undergoing the test is made to sit in a comfortable position in a quiet, dimly lit room. Electrodes are placed on the scalp, and sometimes on the skin around the eyes, to measure the electrical activity of the brain and eyes.

Stimuli presentation : The individual is asked to look at a screen that displays a series of visual stimuli, such as black and white checkerboard patterns, flashing lights, or moving patterns. These visual stimuli are designed to stimulate the visual system and elicit a response from the brain.

Brain response measurement : The electrodes on the scalp record the electrical activity of the visual cortex in response to the visual stimuli. The recorded response is then analyzed by a computer, which produces a waveform and measures the latency of each peak.

Interpretation : The audiologist or neurologist interprets the waveform and the latency of each peak to determine the individual's visual system function, including the optic nerves and visual cortex.

How does one prepare for the visual evoked potential (VEP) test?

  • Keep your hair as well as face clean and dry on the day of the test.
  • Avoid using any type of hair gel, hair sprays, hair oils, hair lotion on the day of the test
