Your physician has ordered a computed tomography (CT) scan of your abdomen and pelvis. CT scans create detailed images of your body using X-ray technology and advanced computer analysis. A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis can aid in the diagnosis of bladder, uterine, prostate, liver, and bowel problems.
You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything for three hours before your exam if it includes an IV injection of a contrast dye. Contrast dye is not used in all scans; when it is, it is administered either intravenously or orally. The dye enhances image quality by highlighting specific structures like arteries and making them more visible on the scan. If you are given contrast orally, you must wait 90 minutes for the contrast to reach your abdomen/pelvis area. Please bring any orders from your doctor with you.
Please wear comfortable clothing and leave your jewellery and valuables at home.
A radiology technologist or nurse will ask you a few questions about your medical history.
Any allergies you may have should be disclosed to the technologist, radiology nurse, and/or physician. The technologist will explain your procedure and answer any questions you may have while positioning you on the exam table.
If you are given contrast, it may be administered through an IV injection.
The dye may cause you to feel warm all over your body and have a metallic taste in your mouth. This is typical.
If you have itching, sneezing, nasal congestion, a scratchy throat, or swelling of your face, please notify the technologist right away. You will almost always be asked to lie flat on your back with your arms over your head.
The table you're sitting on will be pushed into the scanner. The scanner is open on both sides, allowing you to see out. During your exam, the technologist will always be able to see and hear you.
You will be asked to remain completely still and, at times, hold your breath.
This procedure usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes.
There are no restrictions imposed on you following this procedure. You can eat and drive normally.
If you received a contrast dye injection, you should drink plenty of fluids to help flush it out of your system.
An imaging physician who specialises in CT scan interpretation will read your study. The results will be sent to your doctor within 48 hours.
Your doctor will go over the results with you and explain what they mean for your health.
